Martha Stewart Guilty on All Counts

NEW YORK - Martha Stewart was convicted Friday of obstructing justice and lying to the government about a superbly timed stock sale, a devastating verdict that probably means prison for the woman who epitomizes meticulous homemaking and gracious living. The jury of eight women and four men deliberated three days before convicting Stewart of all counts against her. The charges carry up to 20 years in prison, but Stewart will almost certainly get much less than that under federal guidelines at her June 17 sentencing. Her former stockbroker, Peter Bacanovic, 41, was convicted on all but one count against him, filing a false document.Hahaha.. That's right.. no more Ms. Nice cook.. I hope she finds a good cellmate named.. "Big Sally" Or.. "Large Marge" ... :)     :twisted:EDIT: I wasn't sure if this fell into the "Political" Place Statecop, I just thought it was interesting, but if it does, Feel free to delete away! :)

Heh, and her stock dropped 3% when the verdict was released.I dunno, kinda have mixed feelings about this one. Did she do somthing bad and needs to be punished? Yeah, she did. At the same time though, I know there are people getting away with things like this on a much worse scale then her. She's an easy target, that's why I figure they zeroed in on her and not other people.

Ok, I guess I'll explain it.Martha Stewart is a woman who had a tv show where she showed how to do decorative and practical things with food, gardening, household items, etc. She then began publishing a magazine along these lines, and now has a line of clothing and household items at K-Mart, which is like a smaller version of Wal-Mart. However, there are many rumors (which are likely true rumors) about how horrible a person she is, treating her family and employees very cruelly, while appearing very nice and cordial in public.Well, she also used to be a stock broker, and as a result she was still very active in the stock market. One stock in particular she held was a biotechnology stock called Imclone. This company had developed a treatment for a disease (I forget which one). However, this treatment was rejected by the Food and Drug Administration, the government agency that checks the safety of all food and drugs sold in the US. As a result, the Imclone stock plummetted. Well she sold this stock the day before the FDA rejected the treatment, and so she saved a whole bunch of money. She most likely had insider information from the company and sold the stock because she found out beforehand about the FDA's decision, which is illegal. For some reason she wasn't charged with securities fraud for this, but she was charged with obstuction of justice for hiding/destroying/altering evidence related to her insider trading to prevent being charged with securities fraud, which she never was charged with. She was convicted of obstruction of justice, and many people are happy because of how horrible a person she is in private, and now she has to cut ties with her company that produces her magazine and her K-Mart line of items. This is a good lesson for everyone: you fall through the ice when you try not to slip. Best to just be open with your actions, and things are likely to turn out better. Your honesty will go a long way.
