Screw Ups & Close Calls on the Job

The most costly mistake I have ever made was when I was training another technician on how to replace the fan in a Transformer Rectifier. There were two of them to repair. I repaired one while he repaired the other. As we were reinstalling them into the Airplane I was paying more attention to what he was doing then myself. Long story short I crossed the power and ground wires. I sent 28VDC to the chassis of the airplane. Needless to say it sounded like the forth of July in the cockpit when power was applied. It was a long list of damaged equipment to the sum of $15,000 in repaired and replaced parts.

I was lucky I had an understanding boss who only told me not to worry about it, thats why we have insurance.

My worst screw up was about 12 years ago I think and I parked my bus at the bus terminal and proceded to walk inside the staff room to get a drink. All of a sudden someone said " hey, your bus is rolling away".

I go back outside to see my bus rolled about 60 feet ending up on a park bench. I rolled over a bus stop sign and just missed a lady in a wheelchair then landed on the bench. I got a day off no pay. I guess I forgot to set the brake. LOL.

*wonders if JPennStar works with me* hahaha...

My techs were rewiring something once at a school in L.A., and they heard a big *ka-pow*, and they looked around the room... and seemed ok. They peeked into the classroom next door, and 5 pc's were smoking!! LOL. I can't tell you about my personal screw-ups at work, because this is a family-friendly site. *evil grin*

Ya it's funny now. BTW, the buses are worth about 475,000 coins.

so thats like....5 american dollars? :p

disclaimer:

1 CAD is actually equal to 88 US Cents, so its pretty close

When I was in the Navy working on F-14's, it was my first day on the flight line and I walked between the huffer (huffer = a small turbine engine mounted on a trailer that supplies air to start the Aircraft engines) and the airplane just as the switch was flipped to supply air to the aircraft. The hose separated from the huffer and hit me square in the tool belt I was wearing, it knocked me to the ground and gave me a huge bruise thanks to the large wrenches in the tool belt that was all that happened it could have been a lot worse. Lesson learned, don't walk there!

Another stupid thing I did in the Navy. I was in Cold Lake Canada and it was freaking freezing cold, imagine that? Well I seen the Canadian Air Force guys warming their hands using the exhaust from their huffers. This looked like a great Idea, except the exhaust on our huffers did not go through a heat exchanger and when I put my hands into the exhaust my leather gloves instantly shrunk two sizes. I did not suffer any burns, thank god. But needless to say it was freakin HOT. :p

well i dont really work but one day at school, well actually today my friend was running a CNC lathe, well he kinda programmed it wrong and the whole tool and tool holder ran right into the chuck which holds the part. luckily the chuck was made of aluminum and didnt damage the machine or the tool. but when sometihng rotating at 3600 rpm hits a fixed object the sound was kinda scary :|
