There's a soundpack that (getting a little bit technical here) actually causes this. I ended up reinstalling FA, but you can solve it real easily by just deleting your upham ambience sounds in your fa/sound/(whereever) folder. A sound in that soundpack was actually recorded in stereo, and then was (unsuccesfully) attempted to be converted to mono, and causes the game to get really really crappy, I went through the same thing, but yeah, it's just a certain sound in there, just go through, find that sound file upham_ambient or somethingl ike that, and just delete them or get defaults, that should fix you up.
