I'm hoping they don't ruin it this time around :( C&C3 had potential, but when they added the generic scrin, crappy unit usage, and didn't both to update any of the strategy element to fit today's typical rts style, it just sucked. Btw.....we need to start a thread and find out what RTS games people are playing :)

:) -Supreme Commander is one of the best RTSs out there, but not for everyone.

-LONG games

-Must use STRATEGY not just tactics

-Sadly it CAN just become a low-level spamfest (playing on naval maps fixes that for the most part)

:D -World in Conflict is FANTASTIC, and great for FPS guys.

-Hop into an ongoing battle only deal with units (no base) and have fun

-If you get a good team working together it is EPIC

-CAUTION: AIR players are almost all meat heads that do not realize air-power is SUPPORT and everyone else is not supposed to be supporting them...

:) -Universe at War is neat...but they had to crap it WAY down so it could be cross-consoled onto the 360...

-Coulda been great (original yet balanced)...

-worth borrowing from a friend, but having to use LIVE and play with xbox kids completely kills online.

:) -The BOSS GENERALS home-brew mod for Generals (it is not CnC!!!! EA just whored out the name), is really fun...takes some getting used to...seems overpowered, but it is well balanced.

:D -FREEKIN' Starcraft

-There is no real reason to not still be playing this game.

-YES...I DO think they are gonna blow it with SC2...it is what they do.

:D -Maelstrom is a little known game, but worth looking into for RTS nuts.

-3 faction...3 VERY different factions

-The Biological faction DOES NOT SUCK or feel tacked on.

-Neat story, fun SinglePlayer...good luck finding MP games.

-You must be willing to accept that the people that made it are the opposite of other big game companies...Their coders and play testers where lacking but the creative and RnD guys where top notch. The result is a game that can actually get annoying to play at times, but is worth playing.

 -Sins of a Solar Empire...is...different

-I was not a huge fan, due to playability issues (VERY difficult to defend and the computer is too psychic)

-BIG game with good ideas and interface

-A good enough start at Large Scale RTS space games (I know it is not the first) that I will get the next one too.

:D -Rise of Legends is SOOO PRETTY!!

-A very nice RiseOfNations game.

-3 different factions, from complicated and versatile to bland but POWERFUL.

-worth getting just for single player.

-Their art department was over funded :D

:) -Dawn of War is a fun 'skirmishy' game

-This one is about expanding...your recourses actually come from holding strategic locations (some times odd out of the way 'strategic' locations :) )

-Has a Warcraft feel (light research and minimal base-building)

-Most non-vehicle units are bought in squads that can be reinforced and individually armed (you can lose a Leader or gunner before grunts)

-Alot of factions (As with the tabletop game 40k it was modeled after (I like that game too))

-If you like CnC and do not like to sit and 'turtle' until max tech...this game is for you.

:D -EARTH 2150 and the newer 2160 are great large-scale research HEAVY RTS games...they are more about strategic research and larger scale battle fronts than most are used to.

-The research trees for 2150 are MASSIVE and take about 12 hours to fully acquire...as such you must pick a general strategy and try to stuck with it, adjusting it as you gain intel on enemy tech.

-2160 keeps a similar feel but is dumbed down for todays gamers.

-You must be willing to keep track of alot of stuff while playing...if you forget to research something for 5 mins the enemy has an unrecoverable edge...you also need to know when too stop...if you spend everything on research and have not secured and recourses you will lose, and if you try to complete the research tree you are going to be acquiring technologies you may not need (depending on your opponent)

I do have many others but they are the Picassos and not really worth bringing up in general chat.

DEBATE! FLAME! AGREE!

Warcraft III

When ever I think about playing an RTS, I go to Warcraft III. I like to see some of the custom maps people make. Some of them are done well enough to sell as there own game. Like DoTA for example, but that is because it is WAY over played.

Rise of Legends

I thought about getting Rise of Legends. It looks really good and I might get it now because of your review. (And I need something) Does it play the same as Rise of Nations?

Dawn of War

I never had really good online play. And the computers were too easy or too hard, never found a good medium. I enjoy RTS where I get a more individual control of each unit. Group unit don't make a whole lot of sense too me because it just seems like a mess.

Starcraft 2

Why do you think they are going to blow it with Starcraft 2? I haven't played a Blizzard game yet that I don't like, and I have played them all. I think Starcraft 2 will be the best RTS since......well, the first one.

holy hell how can you make a list of rts games and not mention games like

aoe 1,2,3, myth ect ect

empire earth+expansion

and my fav although it's a turn based strat game civilization any of them but 4 is awesome.

Wow, I forgot about AoE. That was my first RTS. But it would be hard to play anymore. You can only build 1 unit from a building at a time.

in aoe3 you can build like 5 at a time i think

...THIS! Civilization FTFW.

Also, Ground Control II was a real blast.

I think you can do more than that. In AOE2 and 3 you can build like 12 or 15. I didn't like 3 that much, but the graphics were good.

Ground Control II was a real blast.

I don't get ur point... :p ...

 -Must be some game we have not heard of...any good?? :p

aw, thank you for the compilations Freefall  I've been itching to find more RTS people. Currently Ragnarok and I have been playing:

-Company of Heroes & Opposing Fronts

-Supreme Commander

-Civilization 4

I have tons of others, but I'll have to check into a few of the ones you listed that I don't have  Thanks again!

i played sins with my bro over lan.

its actually really fun but it takes a longgg time to play a game.

psychic AI's are frustrating as hell.

if u like strategy, try heroes of might and magic. turn based strategy rpg. i've been a fan of the series for a long time now. always a good hotseat game.

/agree

Warcraft III was the RTS I got into as well. Fantastic game, very well done. I've been playing dota since the old RoC version came out and it's grown a lot since then. Just got approved as an official Electronic Sports World Cup game and I think it is only going to get bigger.

I really don't think Blizzard is going to blow it with Starcraft 2. It might not be as phenomenal as Starcraft 1 was, but nothing can really live up to that. What is it? 11 years and still going strong? Also, I haven't seen Blizzard blow any of their games to be honest (I'm thinking Starcraft 1, Diablo 2 + Exp, War II + Exp, War III + Exp, WoW and on as those are the only ones I have played).

:) -Right. I DO like blizzard, and they make good games. I did not mean to imply THEY always fail to make sequels that are worth anything, but rather gaming companies in general. I understand that EA would be on StarCraft 8 and it would be set in modern day based on one squad running around killing Iraqis. I can therefore maintain some hope that a good company is actually putting time and effort into a sequel, but I have gotten used to letdowns in that area and vented a bit.

Yeah, I can understand that. As amazing as Bioware is, they really blew it when they released KOTOR II.
