Posted July 6, 200817 yr Well i put my new rig under the most vigorous test possible. I played Crysis with max settings and AAx8 and got an average of 25fps. I also played from beginning to end which is about 4hrs straight. Although i didn't put the AA to the max i did set it to the max for a little bit just to see what it could do. At 16QAA i got an average of 15fps compared to the 5fps my old 8800GTX would get. The GTX280 chews up Crysis as if it was nothing. If anyone looking for a new GFX card get the Nvidia GTX280 you will not be dissapointed.
July 6, 200817 yr GREAT GOOGALLY MOOGALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get two and watch that bad boy fly! I'm thinking about an Intel chipset with two 3870's, that would be a monster. They're coming out with a 3870 X2 soon! The 3870 is just as fast as the 260, and slightly less than the 280. The 3870 is 1/2 the price of the 280, so for the price of two 3870's you, it would cost the same as the 280 and destroy that card! Finally AMD is back in the GFX card race. This is an exciting time indeed. The 2870 also uses much less power. This is the first time I've been excited about a GFX card since the 8800GT. I actually gave my nephew my standard clock GT and kept the EVGA SC, I'm never home so SLi seemed like a waste, he'll appreciate the card much more than I will. It's time to look at AMD again. With the added benifits of the OC'ing abilities of the X35/X45 Intel chipset, I can make a screamer for much less than an nVida chipset. Too bad I just bought my 750i FTW. I'm upset. If I can get a few good months under my belt, at work, I can smell the ozone my next upgrade will be producing. Darn you Ding for one upping us all.
July 13, 200817 yr Please don't attempt such things with laptops of limited air flow. Meltdown may not stop until China.
July 13, 200817 yr Nicely done Ding, i am still on my 8800gtx, juice it till' the end, then i'll have a look for something new.....
July 14, 200817 yr AMD/ATI now have the 4850 and the 4870. The 4870 is the best bang for the buck right now. It beats down the 260 and comes in decent range of the 280 I believe. For the price though you can't go wrong with it. Finally amd/ati have made a card worth while. By the way....With the release of their new line. Nvidia took a little hit with their price gouging of the 260 and 280...Some of the companies weren't happy when nvidia asked them to lower the price of them so they could compete with ati new line. Sorry huge ati fan..
July 14, 200817 yr Author There is nothin wrong with ATI/AMD. It will be nice if ATI brings something good to the table that way Nvidia will step it up some.
July 15, 200817 yr I just built a computer for a friend; 750i, 8800gt, quad core, 4 gigs of ram; he hooks it up to his 47" 1080p TV and can play it on high settings on the highest resolution. It's pretty sweet-looking. It's almost like playing life-sized. Now if we threw another 8800gt in there, we'd be in business.
