The Medal of Honor 150th Anniversary

Today is the national Medal of Honor Day, marking the 150th anniversary of the award - read on to find out more!

Today is the national Medal of Honor Day, marking the 150th anniversary of the award, bestowed upon the most courageous men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Here at Danger Close Games and Electronic Arts, we wanted to take the time to recognize all recipients of the Medal of Honor during today’s various ceremonies.

We’re not the only ones who are paying tributes to the recipients of the most prestigious award in the military – The Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation and Society is holding a formal ceremony at the Hall of Heroes in the Pentagon, hosted by Admiral Mike G. Mullen, USN, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Nearly 100 people were invited to attend, including senior military staff, civilian leaders, Pentagon officials, and over 30 recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The Medal of Honor was introduced in a bill in the U.S. Senate on December 9, 1861, and was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on December 21, 1861. The Award was first given out on March 25, 1863, when it was awarded to the six surviving members of Andrews’ Raiders: Pvt. William Bensinger, Pvt. Robert Buffum, Sgt. Elihu Mason, Pvt. Jacob Parrott, Sgt. William Pittinger, and Cpl. William Reddick.

Thank you to all the men and women of our armed forces who have served or are currently serving their country.
