April 27, 201114 yr /monthly_06_2011/post-1657-130810233695_thumb.jpg Picked this up at the Syracuse Gun Show last week. The ammo 7.92mm. You'll find it mostly labeled as 8mm Mauser. Excuse the mess. Was cleaning my room after I got done cleaning most of the cosmoline off the gun./monthly_06_2011/post-1657-130810233599_thumb.jpg
April 28, 201114 yr I have asked the experts and kerosene is the cleaner of choice to get off cosmoline. btw I don't care what they wanna call it its a 98K without the Nazi proof marks!
April 29, 201114 yr Author I know its a 98K but I like to be technical. In my terms its not a true German Mauser but it is still a Mauser. The bolt is German that I'm almost sure of. The chamber and bore are Yugoslavian. However it was manufactured in 1944 so thats close enough for me. As for cleaning the cosmoline there is still work to be done. The bolt is free of it but the rest of the rifle still needs attention. Driving down to Albany one day really cut down on my cleaning time. Not to mention running to cover every 5 seconds for a tornado warning j/k. I'll have to show some pictures that the locals took of that storm. So my next three days off I'm going to strip down the rifle completely including removing the stock. Can't wait to shoot it on my next weekend off.
April 29, 201114 yr Sweet !!! Nice piece you got there soldier....and the rifle is not half bad either....hahahahaha. No really....thats a nice rifle. And you can use brake cleaner to clean it as well.... I know, I've used it.
