New computer

Featured Replies

i'm willin to spend about 800-1000 on a new comp. I don't need the miscelaneous junk-mouse, keyboard, etc. What would you guys buy?Should i wait for the 64 bit processers to go down :p -to expensive right nowI also heard DDR2 is comin out.Whatya think Mac

www.dell.com allows you to "build" your own computer, leaving out bits you don't need (keybouard, mouse, etc), and specifying sizes and speeds and such.

DDR2? I assume you're speaking of something else, but DDRMax2 is out for the PS2 and it's HECKA fun!

Well it is somewhat simple. There is always something new coming out so......

Upgrade later when you need to. That means to a new MOBO, proc, PCI express vid card, and DDR2 in two years. This system will be fine till then. Just get a better videocard when you need one.

Get a smallish HD and buy more when you need the room.

Get the fastest memory NOW for AMD is going to a 400fsb proc.

Get the XP 1800 oem and overclock it. :p :( . The ones Newegg have right now are going up to 2200 to 2400 mhz on good air cooling.

Get a really good cooler. I recommend the Thermalright SLK900A with a 92mm fan

Get a 80gb 8mb cache hd. Buy more when you need it. Not SATA. Get ATA133. It works.

Get 512mb of PC4000 DDR

Get a new case if you want.

No soundcard or NIC is needed.

In time get a new proc and mobo etc etc. Use the old parts for a second system. In no time you'll have 10 like me:) :p :)

CASE ( I have this one ) Dont knock the PS. It is good. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-124-050&catalog=7&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

I would get this case with a clear side panel though. Well built and SCREWLESS. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-127-012&catalog=7&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

CDR/DVDRW/CDRW http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-919&catalog=5&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

OR LESS MONEY.......

Floppy http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=21-103-109&catalog=13&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

So it looks like $800 shipped for everything including the DVDRW.

$700 for just a CDRW/DVD/CD with the system.

You cannot get much faster than this if you overclock your chip to 2100mhz and put your FSB at 200.

And please do not GO DELL.

I cringe/scream when I hear Dell. Good for the masses but that is all.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

what mac saidalso to add, DO NOT EVER go to a large brand name PC company (dell, tiny, etc [alienware = ok]) always try to support your local computer shop, (macs hardcore computers =D)A. you will get better service, B. if it goes wrong you can take it back and tell them about it, whereas with a larger company you are likely to get shuffled around departments till you eventually get it fixed.C. the little shop doesnt have multimillion $'s worth of funding to feed his or her family with, They may be a little bit more expensive, but you will get 100x better service from them because you, the customer, are their survival, whereas with a larger company you are "just another bill in the cash register"Try to get as much as you can out of the shops, find out what they will do to "sweeten the deal", go in with cash, let them know exactly what you are looking for and let them give you a price-range before you tell them what you are looking to spend, IF they ask you how much you are gonna spend, tell them you dont know yet, they will give you a better quote with no price in mind, use what mac posted to do a little research, get some ideas of prices, Some makes to look out for and if you can get ASUS motherboards, with AMD chipsets, At the moment Asus are leading the way with AMD in terms of mobo/processor technology ATi Grafix, << their drivers are better, nvidia released a few crappy drivers over the last few months to try to keep up with ATi, obvious disadvantages there...if you want an sATA ahrddrive then look for SEAGATEif you want normal IDE drives then look for IBM drives (come with a standard 5 year warranty)Coolers = thermalright, Zalman coolers look sweet and do the job second to none, Cases = Lian Li (great looking and well designed, huge expansion space) coolermaster make nice cases, but expensive to boot.RAM = look for big brand name ram, usually tends to be better, samsung, toshiba etc will last betterLook for a PSU that can handle this as well 450watt twin fan is always a good option.Philips DVD/DVDRW or CD/CDRW drives, they own patents to the technology and also lead the field in this areahope that helps!

Thanks for your input guys. Now, can I get to lay down the green stuff
A ps is not as critical as it was before. These new XP chips do not draw the amps that they used to. The videocard and Mobo does now.You can get by easily with a good 300 watter. Dont get me wrong. A good 300 watter is great. A cheapo is not. A cheapo 500 watter is not either. They are critical but quality is more important.I have plenty of systems with 300 watters and they run fine and have been for two years.IBM has had problems with their drives. Remeber the 60gb Deckstar fiasco not too long ago.I would stay away from them for now.
Sorry i have to disagree with you there Shotty a good PS is a must when looking for new computer ,I say go with at least a 450 watt, this will give you some options in the future ,and I must also say this to all of you "you must keep your system clean" this includes your PS if you do not heat builds up and slowly degrades the output of the PS , so ask yourself <Hmmmm when was the last time I cleaned it< and Mac I would hate to clean your systems That would take some time
All of my systems are clean. Come over and see for yourself.Quality not quantity of power is more important.I am running a 300 watt Antec right now in my system. I have others with Enermax and Enlight 300's.ALL have overclocked CPU's and videocards.I have even run a AMD system on an old 90watt Gateway ps. It ran till I was able to get a replacement.two weeks later.Given a choice I would take a 300 watt quality ps over a 650 watt no-name (eg. Powmax) any day.You are never going to max out all the rails on a ps. 3.3, 5, 12 all at the same time unless you have so many fans and lights that you are taxing your ps 12 volt rail which would draw power away from the other rails.

yeah that sould hold for 3-4 years..

BTW if i add more fans to my comp will it process faster or just cool faster?

Intel will cost you extra cash for no improvement on speed. A lot more cash.Price it out.It is NOT worth it.NOT NOT NOT.Mac
It will "process" more air faster.Your case will have more thoughput.Your computer will not be "faster" though.

So you are saying bus speed is not important? Also I'm goin 50/50 with my bro, I really don't mind payin more for betterI want this comp to run really fast. The last thing I want to have happen is buy a new comp that dogs out after a year. A lot of new cool games coming out! Some get 270 fps playin FA, I'd like to get close to that-I've already got a good graphix card
