That is Eddie Rickenbacker and his plane. He is a bit  of a local legend even though he was not born in Indiana. He use to own the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Edward Vernon Rickenbacker (October 8, 1890 – July 23, 1973) was an American fighter ace in World War I and Medal of Honor recipient. He was the original "Ace of Aces" With 26 aerial victories, he was America's most successful fighter ace in the war. He was also a race car driver and automotive designer, a government consultant in military matters and a pioneer in air transportation, particularly as the longtime head of Eastern Air Lines.

Eddie Rickenbacker in his Maxwell racer at the Indianapolis 500 in 1916. He drove the same car in the Harvest Classic at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on September 9, 1916. He crashed while leading the 100 mile feature.

 

Later in life he own Eastern Airlines.
