Posted April 2, 20196 yr This is a full blown and lengthy look at happened with Anthem. Multiple interviews are included. The issues are a lot more complex and deep rooted than we were speculating. The pressure on staff was so high some went on stress leave for months - some never came back. How BioWare's Anthem Went Wrong KOTAKU.COM It wasn’t even supposed to be called Anthem. Just days before the annual E3 convention in June of 2017, when the storied studio BioWare would reveal its newest game, the plan had been to go with a different title: Beyond. They’d even printed out Beyond T-shirts for the staff.
April 3, 20196 yr Author Ya, I had no idea on frost bite being an issue. It sounds like a case of an engine built for a purpose being jury rigged into another. This is not good news with EA driving its use for all of its games.
April 3, 20196 yr Its a shame how the industry has fallen. I mean Anthem looked really fun early on and in typical fashion they screwed the pooch. The Div 2 released pretty stable but from what I've read without a lot of the "Golly Gee Whiz" factor and it has been hailed as "How a sequel should be done!". It boggles that simply having your game stable at launch is hailed as an accomplishment now.
April 3, 20196 yr Author Well, I dont think Div 2 was ever going to have the "golly gee whiz" factor in it being a sequel as redemption for Div 1. On the flip side, it gave direction and purpose to the new game which I think resulted in a better product. It still has its issues, but less than we keep seeing from new games out of EA. I'm not sure what the right answer is for game development, but things like Anthem certainly point to what is wrong. All we can do is demand outcomes that hopefully lead to better practices. Even if they are as minimal as stable at launch with community support.
April 3, 20196 yr BioWare went rogue on EA with its Dragon Age 4 announcement (retraction) VENTUREBEAT.COM Casey Hudson teased a Dragon Age 4 reveal in his blog even though EA's executive team told him not to. Also, here's what happened with Anthem. I think this news is just getting started. Another article has some more response to the Kotaku article. Some in agreement and some not but I think what EA is doing to it's developers is just starting.
April 4, 20196 yr BioWare's awful response to Kotaku's exposé pours petrol on a raging PR fire WWW.ROCKPAPERSHOTGUN.COM BioWare's PR response to Kotaku's article really only made matters worse. Yep its starting to get ugly now. Stay tuned. I'm sure there is a lot more to come.
April 4, 20196 yr BioWare GM Admits the Studio’s “Problems are Real” Following Scathing Anthem Exposé WCCFTECH.COM BioWare's public and internal response to the recent Anthem exposé are very different. Read what Casey Hudson had to say to employees. Looks like Bioware Casey Hudson won't be working under EA for long.
