February 24, 200422 yr Okay, heres the deal: My dad's computer has been plagued by a lot of pop up ads just while sitting on the desktop. It keeps popping up every so often with annoying messages even while not browsing the web. So I run Adaware and Spybot, and catch a lot of stuff. The pop up ads continue though. I even tried to run a Norton Scan but it slowed down so much that the scan would take many, many hours. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this? By the way, we are on a wireless network (linksys) with all the routers and stuff. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.Sharpshooter6*Could there be a problem with this stuff throughout the wireless network rather than the single computer too? I've heard stuff about smurf attacks and the such, but I can't seem to make sense of it all. Gracias. 8)
February 24, 200422 yr do you use windows messenger? that will do it to ya. what version OS do you use, never heard of a router with built in spam that would be a new one.
February 24, 200422 yr Hmmm, your problem sounds like a trojan or virus. My roommate seemed to have the same problem, the scan found over 2,000 infected files. I don't see why you're having problems scanning for viruses. Maybe disconnecting completely from the internet during the scan might help. Who knows, I'm just throwing ideas out in the air. 8) We used the free McAfee antivirus provided by our college.
February 24, 200422 yr Ok, you want to A. download adaware, (not sure where from google should know) B do this... do this only.... if you are not computer competant i would advise not doing this!.. First goto Start menu and Run In Run type "Services.msc" without the quotes. and hit ok. You will be presented with a list much like the one in the below picture (this is dependent on your system and may not contain all the files mine does) Scroll down till you see "messanger" double click this option... picture 2. you will be shown a small box with a menu (pulled down) in this box there are 3 options (as shown), Automatic, Manual, and disabled select disable and click apply. Close the windows and reboot.. WARNING DO NOT CLICK ANYTHING ELSE IN THIS WINDOW.... SERIOUSLY BAD MOJO (the evil black suited ninjas of death and flaming swords kind) IS ASSOCIATED WITH SOME OF THE STUFF IN HERE... one wrong click = long techsupport stay, reinstall of windows, or big repair bill...............
February 24, 200422 yr I had the 'exact' same problem, and i turned on the windows firewall. BUT Shotty has proven that to kill the annoyance, you must dig deep. Thanx Shotty!
February 24, 200422 yr It does seem like the "Messenger" problem, but that is kinda odd it was happening through a router. I guess it still could, but that is quite odd, because I thought routers were able to stop that. That "messenger" application Microsoft calls it a "feature". It is spossed to be used in bissness where you want to give everybody a quick message. But of course pop-ups figured it out. P.S. There is some way that you can use Command Prompt and you friends IP adderess to send those messages to them. Of course they have ot have it on.
February 24, 200422 yr Just do the easy fix and download the Google tool bar.It is free and has a built in Popup blocker.I use it and it is great.I got those annoying Orbitz ads. I could not find a workaround. No Spyware worked. It got inot the Javascripting and I cannot find the changes. I searched online for a removal instrucion. No luck.Google to the rescue.
February 24, 200422 yr don't like toolbarsdisable messenger and run norton isI haven't seen a popup I didn't want since, hmmmxp pro has been out how long? add about 2 weeks to that
February 24, 200422 yr The Google toolbar won't stop the messenger pop-up because it only stop Java related pop-up. Messenger messages first arn' Java, and second, are called a "feature".Lately a few pop up are getting through my google toolbar. And when it works it works really well. Like one time I went to a flood site, iamlame.com/flood or somthing like that, and no pop up at all. First I didn't think it was working, but when I re-opened IE 120000 pop-ups had been blocked. Awsome. My pop-up count is 120588. The 588 is the actual amount. The flood site made it go up 10000 every second.
