Deadside - A newbies perspective...

Featured Replies

I've been playing Deadside the past few evenings and gotta admit I've been having fun in it even as a solo. All my opinions are based on the time I have in game but keep in mind I have 0 time played on "official" servers. I have played all my time on a YouTubers (Loaf) rented server (Loaf's Bakery) as official servers are unmoderated, and can be pretty toxic. By toxic i dont only mean in coms/proximity chat but in actions such as safezone camping, base camping etc. If you do try the game I advise that you use a community server that has active admins and rulesets. It just makes the game better.

Aside from the PVP aspect of the game they have missions against AI kinda reminiscent of the Ghost Recon games only the enemy AI is tiered easy, medium, hard, and epic. The tier of the mission of course decides what level of gear you get from completing the mission and opening the reward crate. Hard and epic AI guys will drill you if you dont use cover to your best advantage and keep healed up. Of course being open world and PVP you can find yourself fighting both AI and real players at the same time! I've only got about 8 hrs in the game and still learning the ropes but I've gotten some OK gear, lost it, gotten some more, lost it, rinse and repeat but it's fun.

Haven't built a base yet but plan to maybe this weekend. Unlike DayZ the base raiding mechanic is a lot better IMHO. Instead of someone just being able to break into your base when you aren't around it is gated. To raid a base you have to first kill the owner of the base in open world PVP. Once you kill them there is like a 10% chance they will drop a raid token. If they do you can activate it to raid the base. The catch is you still have to break in with explosives, which are pretty rare, you have to purchase a remote detonator for said explosives, and the person you are raiding must be online. No offline raiding like in DayZ and Rust.

They have a limited number of weapons right now but are expanding it and pricing on the weapons is pretty high as far as in game currency goes but that in and of itself lends to making death cost something especially for newer players. I will need to start upping my loadout to work on higher tiered missions but for now I usually run with a pistol, Pump shotty and the lowest tiered rifle which is around 10-12k in guns.

The game has crafting in it for base building as well as equipment and medical supplies. For example you can purchase bandages etc at the trader to heal up with however you can also loot items in the world such as vodka, moonshine, and rubbing alcohol. cloth items can be torn into rags and used for minimal healing when used as a bandage but with the alcohol items you can craft sterilized bandages which heal a good bit more than just a rag. Rags and rope can be used to craft a improvised backpack if you dont find a bag in game or lose yours. there are more options but thats just a taste.

Right now the game is in early access and they are working on different areas of the game in a pretty systematic way and making sure things work before they move on to the next area and i have to say the game is solid and I really haven't had many issues. Hit registration is pretty spot on and damage scales with the tier of the enemy / weapon. At this time there aren't any animals like in DayZ to hunt so you pretty much subside on canned goods. I cant wait till they add in wildlife and being able to get water from the environment. It will make the survival aspect of the game a lot nicer than oh look I found a soda or lemme eat this can of tuna.

Still has a way to go but them taking the time to get the combat aspects nailed down first is a good thing.

They have a supporter pack DLC you can get with the game which gives you increased storage at the trader(+18 slots), binoculars and a compass (can be found in game but you spawn with them), and skins on the default survival items you spawn with. All in all nothing pay to win so thats a good thing.

All in all I give it a solid 7.5 out of 10 overall and a 8.5 on what they have in place currently and its totally worth the $29 for the game and the supporter pack.
