client.dll error after steam update

I've been playing FA in steam problem free. After steam updated itself, which took few attempts for it to appear to finish update downloads, steam menu comes up, logged in, can see servers, but when i tell it to fire up FA , FA starts loading then i get windows error window pop up saying "could not load client.dll" . It shows the correct path to steam...fa folder. I still have original sierra/half-life/fa folders to play in WON servers, where FA still works. I compared the client.dll of each. They are same size and date. No apparrent change. Tried renaming steam/fa client.dll to .bac and pasted sierra/fa client.dll into steam/fa folder. Same error. I can close everything to get back to desktop, but each time must reset desktop res back up from 640 to usual 1024. Game is set to run in 640 so i presume game failing to finish loading is reason for that. ANY IDEAS ON SOLUTION TO CLIENT.DLL NO LONGER BEING FOUND OR RECOGNIZED ?

I haven't tried uninstalling steam, rebooting, using reg cleaner, rebooting, reinstalling steam yet. Maybe I will if no other ideas come from anyone. Yet steam is working, it's just when i have it start FA. Been so busy thinking about FA I haven't tried other games with it. I do that now and post back.

I've had the same error as reported by Srg_Schulz on 2 separate machines with HL/FA. Both systems had been running FA without difficulty for many months; both fell on their swords after the last Steam update. I've found no report of this problem on the Steam forums, and nothing I've tried to do has changed the error (remove steam.dll, blog file, log off/on etc.). I will try the uninstall/reinstall steam route next. Am not a happy camper.--

Just tried all other steam recognized games in pc :Counter Strike = worksDay of Defeat = "TFC "DMC "OF "RICOCHET "HL "FA can't load library client.dll .Seems it should not be becessary to uninstall reinstall steam and let it copy all games again. Is there a way to get steam to just uninstall it's FA ?Then just get steam to recopy FA from still working sierra\hl\fa folders ?

The client.dll which appears to be exactly the same as the same file in sierra\half-life\firearms\cl_dlls folder is : 1,208 kb in file manager, properties show ... 1.17 mb (1,236,992 bytes), 1,245,992 used, created feb 19, 2004 = steam install date modified oct 4, 2004 = 2.8 update date archive = yes The same file in sierra folder is same except created oct 23, 2003 = 2.8 update install date. Since the sierra fa works fine on won servers still, it seems uninstalling/rebooting/reinstalling steam fa won't likely fix problem. Unless this file contains info relating to sierra or steam install which may be corrupt from first 2 failed steam updates 2 days ago. Renaming steam\fa client.dll and pasting sierra\fa client.dll gets same error trying to run fa in steam.I'll go open this dll to see if anything noticeably wHACKED.

I tried replacing client.dll. I then removed steam fa folder, ran registry cleaner, rebooted. Fa dissappeard from steam game list. Tried pasting sierra\fa folder where fa was in steam. FA reappeared in steam game list but still won't load client.dll library. Finally did add/remove uninstall of steam. (forgot to run reg cleaner after rebooting). Downloaded steam installer from steam and ran it. It logs in but it shows all former games in game list, except fa, and they all greyed out. To try them gets install window that asks for verification code it says it's emailing me. After many hrs no email. I guess without reg cleaned it contains info telling steam what games belong in my game list. fa gone from reg since i ran reg clean after deleting fa folder. so now i add/remove steam again, reboot, run reg cleaner to remove all steam keys, reboot, try steam installer again to see if it scans hard drive for useable games like it did when 1st installed. rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr 8-0

Okay I've now repaired 2 different systems with the same problem as Sgt._Shultz by replacing the Half-Life directory under "SteamApps" directory with a Half-Life directory from a 3rd PC that didn't experience the same "loading client.dll" problem (post Steam update). If I find the subdirectory/file that is the culprit I will post the info as I don't think that many players with this error will have an alternate source for a "good" Half-Life directory (mine was over 400Mbytes).salut,====

[TBT]Gen_Tigerhawk figured out while i at work, to back up to previous window from validation code box window, change email address to send code to, (since i chose "use existing acct" instead of "create new acct" when i reinstalled steam, it seems to have problem sending to email already registered) ... she then got email with validate code within minutes ... upon entering code, steam started downloading half life ... i don't underdstand why the download since i thought it just copied my sierra folder half life before ... she got the half life working ... but when she tried fa she still got "unable to load library steam\...fa\...client.dll .While this is progress that may help some of you. Thanks to [TA] Shotty for client.dll error fix post in steam help desk forum. If no other option i may try it. But time short and just wanna play til have to "crash" so gonna hopefully find more servers then recently in original won network, which would be good idea for the many of us that are "out of steam" ;-)

A BIG THANKYOU TO [DoL]-Laertes-]Int[- . Also to "Bulletproof" who mentioned this file earlier in thread but with little detail i not sure what to make of it. This worked for me and saved my sunday aftyernoon from hrs of removing all half life and reg keys to reinstall all games and steam. Planned work on truck then play here at night. YAHOO ;-)In other pc beside 1st 1, no uninstall ever done with anything, not even steam. Just copy the ifc22.dll file from sierra\half-life folder to steam\half-life folder.SALUTE !! :)

I registered at steam days ago for forum posting helpful info from here to there but they have yet to activate my postability there. I've found many more helpful ideas here so maybe someone that can post at steam site could forward some of the useful info there from here, in the interest of reducing help seeking load on steam and freeing it up more for our stability of play. Thanks ;)
