Computer won't Start Up

Featured Replies

My computer won't start up for some reason.

Here's what I did exactly.

1.I typed in the password to the computer..

It loaded the backround and then nothing came up with it. No icons or bar at the bottom.

2. The computer was making alot of noises still. So I loaded up the 'Task Manager' to see what was using up the comp.

I closed four things:

a. Steam

b. P2P Networking

c. Peer Points Manager

d. and something else, I can't remember

both b. and c. are for Kazaa, I always shut them off because of space.

3. Since nothing happened still, I shut the computer off.

4. I turned it back on, it loaded but when it was supposed to show the password bar, it loaded a black screen saying this exactly:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe Mode

Safe Mode with Networking

Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.

Seconds until Windows start: 28

I have tried all FIVE of those options, which lead my back to this message.

.....

My dad is getting so pissed off right now.. starting yelling to himself about how we don't have the money right now to get the comp fixed 'again' and crap..

So it's either I fix this.. or I'm dead.. because all of my sisters' homework from McMaster was on it, and I wouldn't be able to play again for a long time..

;)

just relax....try to remember what u installed soft/hardware.take out ur HDD and go to a friends comp and put ur HDD in it ..see if that works.
Sounds like Kazaa was left in an improper open state, I've seen this before with other P2P software on XP like bittorent. What worked for me1)Remove all network cards so XP ignores extraneous requests from p2p software stuck in a loop as it loads. (if the card is built on the motherboard, disable it in your bios)2)Get into safe mode (if it works, that was the problem, if it resets again, it's somthing else)3)If you can get into safe mode, uninstall the p2p stuffIf that doesn't work, let me know.
Start in safe mode. Go to the Start menu and click 'run'. Type msconfig in the box. Go to the Startup tab. Unclick all the checked boxes and restart. That should take care of any programs that are causing you problems at startup. If that doesn't work, go back into safe mode and reinstall all of your drivers.
He cannot get into safe mode no matter the choice.I do agree with the Kazaa. Some people have luck with it however I beleive you caught a nasty virus of some sort. Now if you have Norton Antivirus somewhat the same thing happened to my Moms computer. The new virus definitions/ autoupdate thingy for Norton system works caused a driver conflict and no matter what I could not get into any mode safe normal etc etc.I ended up using a floppy and accessing restore points saved in the registry and getting to an earlier point in time in safe mode. Uninstall Norton and then clean up then reinstalling Norton.Pain in the butt. You have windows 2000. I do not know if you can install over the top of it without loosing any information. My sugestions for future problem free computing is to never run p2p programs like kazaa. No matter how successful you may have been there are too many problems around the corner.

Wait. You said I should un-install Norton.I CANT!I cant load the computer up, Mac.
When did you get XP. I thought you still had XP.Well you can get to your restore points saved in your xp's registry. I am not sure how. I will find out.Mac

How would i get in the restore points if i cant even get IN the computer, with safe mode or just anything.I got XP when in December, we "reinstalled" the computer. we got a new harddrive.thanks mac
I might of missed this but...how are you posting on these forums if your computer is messed up this badly? laptop?
Doesn't your start menu that comes up from former improper shutdown also give you the option of step by step confirmation of loading each item ?I had to do that once and when it had trouble knew what was causing it.
This might help:Make CDROM first Boot Device in your BIOS, save and exit. Place your Xp CD in the drive and reboot (you may need to press F8 or other key during boot), once at the setup screen make like you were doing a fresh install. When you have to select a partition/drive to install to, select the one Xp is ALREADY on, and you should see an option to repair.
Thanks Faktor.I am a ME user and just found out from my XP friend that this was the way to "repair" the problem. With ME you put a boot floppy and get to an "a" prompt then type in scanreg /restore pick a day to go back to and hope for the best.
ME!?! I feel for you, really I do. Poor thing, must be tough, I still run ME on my crap boxes, so buggy, oh so buggy. Suggest you go with XP, better than 2000 cause it loads faster and more like origanl windows, of course it is Fischer Price looking but you can change that, seriously I'd get it.
So buggy. Not for ME. (LOL)I have no intention of going that route.I have 11 computers on my LAN all running ME and it is so much easier for gaming and modding at least for ME. (again lol)I know one day I will have to convert but the advantages of it are not there yet.The only bug I have a gripe about ME is a cdrom disc that does not get read by the cdrom drive properly(Bad burn etc etc) and it locks the system. I have people over and game just about every weekend. All the computers are at maximum overclock: system and videocards.I find ME very forgiving, fast and easy on the memory/system demands. How many computers running XP can run most of todays games on a GF3 64mb and 128megs of SDram system ram with a XP1800?Those are just some of the advantages of ME. I can go on but you get the point. What works for you is great. Me works for ME because it is stable and easy on your hard drive, memory and systems. Plus it has the option of restore points.
You got me on the networking, I have a small lan and it is a pain in the ass. I have to use a serperate program cause filesharing is such a pain, I also have to be connected to the internet to handle DNS so the ME will see the XP during games and vis versa. Of course the best comp I ever had on the network was a little box running 98v1 and that could see everthing, really bizzarre.

Also that is one reason why I love Macgyver so much!

Update. My dad decided to get pissed off, not try to get the XP CD, and waste $300 to fix the goddamn computer..sry for the language. And im banned from it.. as he yelled at me..later all..
I sympasize. The former idea of booting from cd or floppy best. But without borrowing cd from someone, only option is step by step boot option til you find device driverfile or exe that won't load, then step by step again and say no when you get to it. Do you know dos commands ?If you can figure out the problem file and/or folder, i'd try deleting that id dos.Persevere ... you can't come out with ideas if you get flustered ... stay calm and find someone to lend cd maybe.
Hey ripper,Same thing happened to me back when i had windows 98...Basically... i put the the windows CD in the drive and asked windows to reinstall itlsef... worked perfectly without losing any programs
