April 24, 200421 yr I did some research on how the internet works, and now i have some questions. basically i read that the internet is owned by nobody. Though large companies operate the backbones that allow the information to move. For all you IT specialists my questions are as follows Is it possible to be connected to a NAP from a home? Considering that i have an optical line already comming to my home and i get all the neccesary cisco hardware to make this possible. Plus the neccessary computers too. The major backbone company here is called teleglobe.( www.teleglobe.net ) I was wondering if, I would tell them that i am a "company" that wants to connect to one of their NAP. Is this fairly simple to do this? what are the estimated fees involved? are there any monthly fees or is it a one time fee. the reason i am asking this is because i want to be abel to run servers, for games, websites etc I hate paying 40 bucks a month for internet that isnt even that great (1.4 down 319 up) (When 3 people in my house are using it at the same time i get pings that just are unbearable) I hate the fact that to run game severs or servers in general have outragous monthly fees. I want to be my own "IT guy" to say, i dont care if i have to maintain my own network because i love to do stuff like that anyways. I want to be able to controll my internet usage, not some company that has crappy customer service and limits me on what i can do. I am thinking that if i do this all i have to do is pay a one time fee for all the hardware and to be connected. That there are no monthly are yearly fees after that. I may be wrong but i want to clear this up. thanks in advance.
April 25, 200421 yr Author NAP = network Acess Point ????? Yes nap = network acess point every major city has one.
April 25, 200421 yr yeah, I don't know if you could really run one of those easily or cheap...ly from your home, because if you could, everyone would be doing it :PI don't know much about it, but I would say just paying certain amount of bucks a months is easier and cheaper
April 25, 200421 yr Author yeah, I don't know if you could really run one of those easily or cheap...ly from your home, because if you could, everyone would be doing it I don't know much about it, but I would say just paying certain amount of bucks a months is easier and cheaper well i figured the reason why not everyone is doing this is because there arnt any optical lines in neibourhood areas. so what the phone companies tried to do is use what they already have. If i had to put an optical line i would have to go through the city and that would be somewhat a hassle. then to hire someone to put in 5-20km worth of optical line just for me, that means digging a trench in my yard and anyones yard that is in the way, on top of that they would have to go to the main street and feed it underground, or on the telephone poles. i would think the cisco hardware is $$ to. in the end though i would think it all pays off.
April 25, 200421 yr So in other words your wanting to make the fastest internet connection possible which is a DS3 connection that'll just set you back $65,000 a month
April 25, 200421 yr A DS3 isn't the "fastest" It's just a measly 45mb/s Now if you could get an OC 148 out of this, I'd be interested!
April 25, 200421 yr Paluch. It is really hard at costly to do that. You will have to pay around 300-400$ a month on the connection (a t1 connection). So i really dont think its worth it. Plus instalation which is from 1000-10000$. In ur case its prob around 1000$

All i will do is connect my self to a nap. This requires making an agreement with teleglobe. sure there will be instalation costs. and i am estimating 10k+ but in the end it should pay its self. t1 connection ---> $1500 a month X 12 months X 2 years =$$$ i am not planning to lease optical lines from bell/ loacl phone company. I want to put in my own optical lines that connect directly to the NAP. realize if this is possible the speed i will be seeing is oc 12 to oc 48 depending on the NAP.
April 25, 200421 yr Yes but that backbone is owned by someone. So you will have to rent from that company. What you dont think rogers is paying to another company.
April 25, 200421 yr paluch what mano is saying is that you might have to pay the city to let you leech off of them =)
April 25, 200421 yr Well, While you're leeching, let people leech off you. Charge the people Double, and start making a profit of your awesome connection.

What you dont think rogers is paying to another company. doesnt rogers have their own backbones? i am thinking to do the same. make my own backbone except i am the only one connected to it. All i have to it make an agreement with teleglobe to be connected to one of their NAP. Company's do this everyday and this is how the internet grew too. I guess the reason why it costs so much is because they have to hire IT guys to maintain the system and power consumption of this stuff unbelievable. i will be my own it guy, and i wont be running that much to suck that much juice. Even if their is a fee thats when i can start charging people, to use my connection. say for hosting and other stuff. i'm thinking there is only a one time fee to connect and get everything settled.

UPDATE..... Unfortunatly the internet is owned by a bunch of nazis and they(teleglobe) say i cant do what i want to do. only coperate companies can.
April 26, 200421 yr Author So incorporate yourself somehow. thats what i was thinking after some hard thinking.
April 26, 200421 yr It isn't that hard to start your own company, you dont even have to do anything. We used to do that to bypass inheretence tax, put everything you own in a dummy coperation, give all the shares to your children(no taxes payed on that) so they own everything, but let you stay in their house. I gues you can do the same but without bypassing any taxation laws. That shouldn't so much of a problem
