I. The Programs

1. The Firearms Modification (HL)

2. Steam (Preferable for a good listing of servers; not necessary)

http://www.steampowered.com/

3. Fraps 1.9D (Product can be purchased but demo version is fine)

http://www.fraps.com/

4. A Video Editing Program of Your Choice

Two Popular Programs:

- Windows Movie Maker (A simple and sufficient program)

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/moviemaker/downloads/moviemaker2.asp

- Adobe Premier (An expensive program, but very professional)

Trial Version Download

5. Adobe Photoshop (A good program if you wish to add custom graphics; not necessary)

6. Dr. Divx (A good program to compress your videos down to size; not necessary)

7. Divx (Good program once you start watching movies that are encoded; not necessary)

II. Making the Video

1. If you have the demo version of Fraps, v. 19D, then you will want to change your resolution in gameplay to 640 x 480. The reason is that the demo version of Fraps records gameplay at a resolution of 640 x 480, which is standard for most Firearms movies. If you were able to purchase the Fraps, then I believe you wouldn't have to change your resolution. *You can also change your resolution at step 6 if you do not wish to do so right now (it helps if you like to play at a higher resolution).

2. When you want to record footage for your movie in-game, hit the console key (defualt is "~") and then type this into the console: record "name". The quotation marks are not necessary. You can name the demo anything you so desire.

3. The demo will only start recording after your first death, so you might want to die quickly after you start recording. (All that will show up is a black screen and then when you die, the demo will start.)

4. After recording all that you want, bring up the console again ("~") and type this into the console: stop. Pretty much self-explanatory but sometimes people will let demos continue to record. If you forget to stop the demo while recording, it is not that big of deal. The demo will record until the round has finished and then it will stop itself. For a complete round, the demo may take anywhere from fifty to ten megabytes (so space isn't an issue for most people).

5. After retrieving all the demos and in-game footage you want, you now will need to go over them in Fraps. Start up Fraps (after installing it of course) and read through all the settings. Everything should be fine on defualt setting except for the movie framerate and the Video Capture Hotkey. I kept it on 10 fps and found that it skipped during some parts of my movie. So I changed it to 30 fps and it works flawlessly. Yet I have a newer computer and 30 fps isn't necessary so 15-30 fps will suffice. Slower computers might want to try 15 fps, though I suggest you experiment on all of them just to make sure. You can change the hotkey if you don't like the defualt F9 but it has never been a problem.

6. Now change your resolution if you haven't already to 640 x 480. Go into Firearms and click "Create Game." Join the game, it doesn't matter what gun you have or map you're on. Bring up the console ("~") and then type: viewdemo "name". Once again, quotation marks are not needed and you want to put in the name of the demo you recorded. You will see the black screen described in Step 3 and then you will see the demo. I suggest watching the demo once first and then going through it again to record with fraps.

7. When you find suitable points in the demo you wish to put in your movie, hit F9 when the part starts and then again when the part finishes. Make absolutely sure you hit F9 at the begining of the part you want in your movie and then a second time at the end of the part you want. The reason is Fraps takes a lot of memory, so you want to be very frugal with your hitting of the F9.

8. After getting all the parts of the demo you want in your movie with Fraps, go ahead and import the clips into the video editing program of your choice. You will need to get familiar with that program, so I suggest you experiment a little before trying to make your movie.

-Continue if you are using Windows Movie Maker

-Go to Step 10 if you are using a different program for video editing.

9. Now you will need to import the recorded parts of your demo from Fraps into the library of Windows Movie Maker (WMM). Start up WMM and then go to File/Import Collections... A browser will come up and then you will need to go to the area where you installed Fraps to get your footage. After getting the footage into the library the rest is up to you. It is all a matter of getting familiar with the program. WMM is a very user-friendly program so you will not need to worry.

10. Experiment! Make your movie! Go go go!

III. Comments

- A lot of the programs I listed are not necessary and I haven't provided a tutorial for them. They are there just in case you become more adept at making movies.
