Computer is acting slow, and Q about XP: Pro

Ok, I really have no way to tell you how slow it is. I can say that it seemed to have started when I noticed that IE6 didn't like to use Google.com, at all. It would just freeze up. Well, I thought, I can deal with that. I tried to remove and reinstall, which seemed never to work quite right. I would "remove" it in the Add/Remove Windows Components, but I never would let me install it with the setup installer, I could only go and tell the Add/Remove Windows Components to add it. Didn't work, got Mozilla. It isn't bad, and Google.com works on that. Now it just acts slow. The whole computer, not just IE "Not Responding". I tried to shut the computer down, well (I have XP: Home) I would click the shut down button and it would would just close the menu. Well I was doing other stuff and then "WINDOWS IS SHUTING DOWN". It took about 3:30 minutes for it to give me the screen. Again, it just takes it a few second longer to do anyting. It is very annoying. Now the question about XP: Professional. I believe that I should just format my Hard Drive, or get a new one. Now I am going to kill two birds with one stone. I am also, slowly, building a new computer. I figure that I need to get the OS anyway and I should just buy that now and install on my old comp. Now, A) I have heard that I can install Pro on as many as I want. Is that true? IF not, then :) I can buy licences for addional computers/ how much would that cost? What are also some things that make Pro "better" that Home? Heard it would be better for someone like me that feels babied when I use Home. I also heard it is better for gaming, dont' know why, doesn't make much sence to me, but whatever. Or, is it just as good to buy Home because Pro give a bunch of things I don't needed. (AKA, i don't really needed Works, I have Works 2002 on a CD already.)Thanks to any help!
Well, Professional is a Buisness and a Power-User oriented super-set of Home. Being as such, it includes things, as you said, More Complex control. Now, everything you can do in Home, you can do in Pro. In Pro, you have, higher level security, more Network features, more user interface features, and more complex management control. As for the problem with your computer, two-words. "Potatoe Gun".

Admins, is there any way to stop a specific person from responding to another certain person's post? lol, j/k
Luker, XP Pro gives you a much better set of management and in my opinion is more stable for runnign as a server, host computer, and for games. As for the multiple computers, the way new OS's by Microsoft are supposed to work is one OS key per scomputer. there are ways around it =] if you are already running xp then you should know by now it is a memory hog. one thing to speed it up would be to buy more ram... remember your ram only runs as fast as it's slowest module... so buy smart for now. there are also certai nfeatures that will run on your computer.. .you don't need these and can turn them off. a faster HD and larger one would also help out a bit... can yo ugive us your current system specs?
I think I'll use Sam.Gen's example and pad my post count as well.

That is a good idea. I'll join you.

Ya, sorry, didn't give specs. But this is an old comp anyway. Got it in 2002. (LONG time in computer time)

HP Pavilion 751n

- ASUS P4S-LA

- Pentium 4, core speed 1.8ghz

- 512mb(2x256mb) DDR 2100

- PNY GeForce FX 5700 Ultra

- hard drive SAMSUNG SV8004H 70gb 38% free space

Just tell me is you need to know anything else. I have defraged, i have Norton, running and i have scanned.

Now, I added the extra 256mb about 7months ago

added the video card about 3months ago

This computer has run very stable for a long time. It has had problems before, but I have fixed the other perfectly. Now I will say it only lags up some times. like for the last 4 hours before when I was righting this it has been fine. All I use Mozilla for is Google.com. IE doesn't like google.

Check out http://www.blackviper.com it shows you lots of services that you can turn off safely for different types of settings(tell mac thanks for that one)

clean up your hard drive and then defragment often at least once a week

I have not run IE directly for sometime but do use MYIE2 from time to time with no problem so you may want to check them out! Hope this helps!!

OK, well I did what Paladin said an then tryed Google.com on IE. It worked, but not because of disabling the servies, how do I know? I didn't restart yet.But if Pro isn't much better then I am getting HomeCheaper. Only real reason. Unless something eludes me...
lol dang 38% free hd space .........id reformat.when u get your new computer use the old one for everything but gaming and just game on the new one.STAY AWAY FROM PORN SITES..they mess up your registry and that slows your puter down drastically.not to mention u can get a virus from just goin to a porn web site.
