August 7, 200421 yr i'm thinking about getting a new sound card, but I want to know a few things before I buy one. . .I don't know how good my sound card is now, I know it uses the realtek ac'97 audio drivers, and it came as part of the Intel 845G chipset, i think it is pretty bad. Is there a way to find out the specs of your current sound card, there has to be a program out there also, will a sound card increase my performace in games, because I heard that it was supposed to help a lot because sound uses up a lot of system resources. if anyone can recommend a new sound card for me that is around $120 that would be much appreciated also, just to be safe is it hard to install a new sound card. I had no trouble installing my video card, but is it harder with a sound card. I could always have a pro do it, but I'm hoping it isn't too hard to do.i have the hewlett packard pc model 753n if you guys need that info for some reason :? i don't wanna buy a soundcard and then find out my computer doesn't have the right slot for one 8) from what i've seen so far, if I'm just looking for some nice Soundblaster Audigy. . . although i did seem some usb sound devices, dont know what they were though :?

August 7, 200421 yr as long as you have an open PCI slot your fine. Onboard sound is usually less of a drain on resources then a pci slot but i have both. Audigy 2 Platinum and the Dolby Soundstorm. I would say get an audigy 2 card, the older models are a lot cheaper now i got mine when it came out two years ago for $200, now only $80. Its not hard at all to install a card just pop it in to the slot, connect your cd/dvd drive and enjoy

August 7, 200421 yr no, it will prooly go down ever so slightly, thoguh its uaually not tocieable, however, if you get yourself a decent pair of 5.1 surround sound speakers, your playing level will increase ever so slightly as well, as you'll be better able to ehar things and locate enemies

August 7, 200421 yr i agree, i play with 7.1 Surround (creative inspire 7700 7.1) and an audigy 2 platinum pro (the one repo has) comes with a host of stuff, and is a sweet card/setup.I didnt notice any drop in performance, but my gaming experiance hightened tenfold, its sweet when you are in a chopper on BFV and you hear a missile coming from behind and going past you!

August 7, 200421 yr the problem is that some pci soundcards still use CPU number crunching to get the sound right. you will get a slight fps improvement if you buy a card which solves all the calculation by itself, instead of relying on the CPU. So try and find a recent soundcard test in which they also tested CPU use. i know there was one a couple of months ago in a dutch pc magazine, so if you can't any online, pls pm me and i'll try and find it and type out the results

Right Shotty, and i have only 4 speakers with a Sound Blaster 5.1 and i can hear where the noises come from... It's very important to hear it to stay alive! Egidio.
