HLSS Alternative (Half-Life Sound Selector)

Hey, it's me Razor!I thought I'd mention it if anybody was intrested.I have released an alternative to HLSS (Half-Life Sound Selector)This program is significantly more advanced than HLSSin more ways than one.(e.g. HLSP supports mutible mods/configurations whereas in HLSS you can only have one mod/configuration)It is written in Visual Basic .NETand requires The .NET runtimes (version 1.1) obviously, andDirectX 9.0.Get it hereI've been using it with Natural Selection and it works justas well as its compeditor if not better. This release doesn't have any documentation unfortunatelybut I'll attend to that for the next release. In the meantimeI've included a quick-start guide below.Just some quick start instructions since the way it worksis somewhat different than HLSS.Open up HLSP and select the sound menu then click "Setup".Another window should appear entitled "Setup".Either type in your Half-Life installation directory or clickbrowse. If you've installed Half-Life in its default directory it should read"C:\Sierra\Half-Life\" (without the quotes) or"C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\Address@Server.com\Half-Life\"After you have finished you should see a box entitled "Mods".Click on the add button. Another window should appear, once it has fill in the modification name and the folderof this modification and click the 'OK' button. If everything goes well an item should appear in the listboxwith the name and folder of the modification you added.Click the 'OK' button to close the modification windowand apply the changes. If you haven't previously setup a script via "Setup Script"button using either HLSP or HLSS then open your sound menuand then open the "Setup Script" menu and click on thedesired mod you wish to have HLSP prepare for use with.If you added more than one modification goto your sounds menuthen open the "Select Mod" menu and then select themodification you wish to use.Next goto your sounds menu and click on "Add". A file windowshould appear where you can add sounds to the currently selected modification. If successful the new added files should appear in the listbox displayed on the main window.Next you need to bind a key to your sounds. You can do thisby double clicking on the binding (which by default will read "None") or right clicking on it and selecting "Edit"You can now press any combination of keys to assign tothe current selected sound (This is one area where HLSP has an advantage over HLSS, because in HLSS you can only assign one or two keys to a sound)When finished simply goto the "Actions" menu and click onActivate and launch your game.Once inside the game you can select sounds with your chosenkeys or by pressing one of the following keys (*these can be changed by goto to the "File" menu and clicking on "Options")F8: Previous SoundF9: Next SoundF10: Display Currently Selected SoundF11: Cycle Bar AlignmentF12: Cycle Current Modification*In the options menu you can also change the bars appearenceand the names of the keys HLSP uses.I think I covered it all. Enjoy!
you didn't provide a link to download itsounds good, I dled HLSS once and got it to work, but you could barely hear the sounds and they were really poor quality too.I'll try it when you get the link up.you should also send this to PHL and get them to post it in their news sectiongive it a spiffy name.
you should add support for mp3sI got loads of songs I'd like to play ingame ;)or, if someone could provide a place where I could change mp3s into wav's, that'd be great!

Just get winamp 5.x and use the global hotkeys.

That is if you simply want to play a song (I assume), HLSS and HLSP use

Half-Life's internal sound system to play a WAV file over HL's voice chat

system. It could be possible to add Mp3 support but the CPU power would

be unreasonable, thus, they would have to be converted before hand.

I'll look into adding a utility to convert from Mp3 to WAV for later releases.

To me, that's just annoying :\

To me, youre annoying. (<3)

Like para said, i would prefer to use Winamp because it has that kick ass llama.

Nice program though, im sure someone will want it.

Erk, why play music files over the voice com? To me, that's just annoying :\

Its your choice if you want to play music files although its not intended

really to be a music player. Besides, Half-Life won't play an entire music

file over the voice com

sorry to necro post, but i just found this program through google, i tried it, and it throws an exception in .NET when i try to run it after it installs. i have all the updates for .NET and im running directx 9.0c

ok this is a major necropost & so I'm closing it. Please in future make a new post and post a link as a reference. :D
