I honestly don't think HL2 is any better than Far Cry or Doom3. Some parts of HL2 look like regular HL, especially the bad textures... The beaches and oceans in HL2 look pitiful compared to Far Cry's. The weapons in HL2 are mostly crap and that ones that are good only have a very limited amount of ammo. All the combines look exactly the same and have some poor AI in some spots. In one scene a group of combines ran right passed me and took cover behind 1 barrel and just stood there. They completely ignored me...I was in disbelief in the final mission. The huge building is extremely blocky and the final mission/ending is horrible.I played through the game on medium and only died twice. Both times were when I fell on the bridge area.Add the fact that thousands of players are having problems with HL2 and I just don't think HL2 is a winner. In HL2's defense, I don't think they challenged the game engine at all. My 5200 runs HL2 maxed smoothly. When the single player and multiplayer mods come out I think we will see some of the most amazing graphics to date but HL2 is nothing special as of now. The moders will be able to add as much detail as they could ever need and the engine shouldn't break a sweat. To me the only thing new was the gravity again and the "all world" water reflections. However, most people think HL2 is god so I just must be "coked out"
I only saw it when it won Best Graphics. I heard from some one that San Andreas won best game of the year. I am confused.

To me the only thing new was the gravity again and the "all world" water reflections.

However, most people think HL2 is god so I just must be "coked out"

hmm...lets see...

1)Some parts of hl2 look like hl1? Hardly. If you can point out any parts, feel free, but since hl1 took place entirely in an underground facility (some outdoors parts, but not many) I can hardly say that you'd find any resemblence between the two. And "oh, well there's lots of pipes, the pipes look the same" is really just nit picking. Far Cry was designed around a single island, so they made every texture, every model perfect for an island situation. Where as hl2 goes over many locals, thus Valve didn't spend as much time detailing each and every object, because that would've taken a really long time

2)The weapons are mostly crap? Wow, I'm glad you offered a reason why. All of the weapons have different situations where they work best. It's true you'll probably won't use the 9mm pistol half way through the game, but besides that I used every weapon I had extensivly. And they don't provide a lot of ammo because they didn't want you running out there, blowing off everything you got, without any worries of running out of ammo. They wanted you to think and use the best weapon for the certain situation

3)All the combine look the same? Whatever dude. This is a highly organized military organization, do you really think they'd look rag-tag like the resistance? There are also different levels (4 in all). The metrocops, the ones with the white helmets and 2 eyes in the beginning. These are the police. The next are the soldiers, who were dark blue armor and have yellow eyes, then there's the elites who have black armor and blue eyes, and the citadel guards, who wear white armor with the cyclops helmet. And try playing the game on hard, that's where you'll get the most out of the AI

4)The huge, blocking building I presume you're referring to is the Citadel. That's combine architecture, it's made to look alien, strange, different in a way. If you get the Raising the Bar book, it explains that the Citadel was supposed to be the overall symbol of the opressivness of the combine. It's bland, rough, and blunt, much like the combine's attitude towards humans. And the final mission was awesome IMO. Hl2 isn't really an all out action game like Doom3 or Far Cry, it actully revolves around story and the characters within the story. Instead of just setting you loose in a Citadel full of combine, they created a realisitc situation, where it was just you and Breen. You got to finally slap that little bum who had been glaring down on you the entire game.

5)Again, you played it on medium, which is easier than one expects. Try hard.

6)Steam is a program that's really first of its kind. Valve are pretty much taking on a task that no other company has ever tried. That task being making a program where you can download patchs, run all your games from, AND stay in contact with your buddies, and making this program work on every computer setup out there. Of course there's going to be problems. And since Hl2 is most intertwined with Steam, it will have problems, much like Steam had problems in the beginning. But now, if you look around, you hardly see any problems with people trying to run the game, expect on crappy systems or strange settings.

7)And I really have to call BS on that remark. Hl2 maxed runs smoothly on your 5200? Do you have a 3.0ghz cpu and a 1gig of ram? I have a 9800pro, 512MB ram, and 2.2ghz cpu and I run at the game at around 60-80fps with max model/texture detaill, no aa, tri af, and no vsync.

As you said, the mods will make this game more than what it orignally is. Look at Hl1, it's lasted a good 7 years because of its amazing fanbase. And it's amazing what those modders did on such a limited engine. Imagine what's possible on such a new, highly flexable engine as source

Anyway, that's me defending Hl2. kthxbi

on the SpikeTV stuff

SpikeTV is totally console biased. I watch it sometimes, and they rarely talk about PC games. Halo 2 won Best First Person Action, a category I personnally think hl2 should've taken easily.

Punisher, I totally agree with you.HL2's AI sucks hard.. rofl u should see this vid some guy made showing how horrible it is, even on Hard.He ran around and was holding a friggin can and he was running right infront of the Combine and they didn't shoot him once, they just run away and took cover. It's the MODS that make Half life amazing, without them, hl2 would be horrible.

I saw that video on hlfallout.com, and tried the can thing. It didn't work
The guy must have put a console setting to disable the combine to shoot him or smt..
You know what the poblem is? The fact that they tell people like 2yrs or more in advance that the game is coming. So you ponder about what the game will be like and you make the great expectations of what the game should be. Then when you get the game its not quite what you expected so u shrug it off like its a piece of crap. I've learned in my many years of game playing that you just have to play the game. Otherwise your just short $50 or $80 in my case.
A note: Far cry is not set on just an island. Some the scenes take place entirely inside.Near the end the buildings really look sweet with the holographic projecters...As for the bad weapons here we go.Hk Match-----------I love this gun, sad thing is its better than the smg and plasma rifle at sniping...SMG-------the smg is a piece of crap, also its called an smg yet it shows rifle rounds when you get ammo for it. ARGHMagnum----------OWNZ, 18 rounds though, simply retardedPlasma rifle--------------inaccurate, not 1 hit kill to head, 90 rounds total. probaly average 15 rounds a kill so with max ammo you might kill 10 guys with it...if your lucky.crossbow----------cool idea buts its worthless on moving targets. They should have added a sniper rifle to supplement this.Shotgun----------I was gonna stop playing HL2 then I got this gun. only 30 rounds though ARGH. although I don't know what the 2 round burst thing is about...Grav gun-----------Pwnz, I almost teared up when I started flining around dead guys.To me HL2 is way to easy. I'm sorry unwanted but medium should not be as easy as it is. I mean ffs every 10 feet there is a health pack. Also the baddies never seem to hit you on their first shot. I almost died, note almost died when I first encountered the walker robot thingys cause,i was nub and tried to take one down with the HK match :p Oh yeah, adding to what ripper said, if you use the grav gun to run around with a barrel the bad guys cant hurt you WTF. They don't even shoot half the time.I'll probably post again because I forgot stuff

Yes, it stutters for a sec or two after a load but then its smooth.

I have an amd64 3000

HL2 doesn't pwn comps. On the forums you'll see lotsa people running it maxed on low comps.

Well since the hl2 has come out and i am playing with you guys again on the cs source server i will post here and argue like a dork too. (no one remembers me... *tears*) Halflife two was made in my opinion when at the beginning i was in the lab with alex and doctor kleiner, and suddenly i saw it.... ACTING!!! omg friggen acting in a first person shooter. after cleaning the brown out of my shorts, i sat in rapt attention as alex shifted her weight and used her body to express herself, dear god the woman moved like a person. here we are and people are whining about the weapons? dude the weapons in the origional halflife blew too. the only ones i really liked were the shotgun (i have an affinity) and the hivehand. but then again halflife isnt QUAKE, its not for the trogs that want to run out point blanking people with rockets and shooting shotguns and mg's that never need to reload. in my opinion you shouldnt be able to carry all those weapons anyway. the idea in halflife has always been that your brain was the "BFG" and the guns and gear were just wrenches and hammers. ill skip over the wrather awe inspiring HAVOK physics because holy cow thats a 200 pager there. and instead focus on the one thing that did irritate the hell outta me in the game, the gravity gun. now i know what your thinkin , but that was one of the coolest things in the game, yea it is. but it can lift a friggen barrel from 40 yards, and yet cannot fling a zombie down a flight of stairs? comon i can shove a 275 pound bodybuilder off a rooftop in R/L with one hand if he is close enough to the edge... accursed lack of physics utilization... all in all HL2 really is impressive if you like a more cerebral shooter than most. as for spike TV they are retarded and console biased, because all the homies in the hood think that consoles is the shit cus they cant afford/ arent clever enough to figure out pc's and thats the demographic that spike caters to. i like gta but come on that game has all the depth of a beatrix potter book. anyway im alive and hangin at the CS source server if you wanna game, any other topics you want me to rant about let me know. SEMPER FI, and merry christmas to our boys in the field.
Well said, Taggart. People are forgetting how awesome the engine really is. Maybe your 64-bit system has an advantage over the 32-bit counterparts, Punisher. :p
Well, I'm not going to comment on what you said, because I like you Pun. (Needless to say, if I did, it would be in the games favor. I don't care about the AI, and every little detail. The game was fun. It was probably one of the most fun games I have ever played. I was scared at times, excited at another, and sometimes the music they played made me want to fight every person in the whole game all at once. I was sure I could take them all on.) Now, you said it stutters sometimes? What!? Man, if you're running max settings, 1600x1200 like I am, you're crazy. I have to call BS there too, there's no way. I get 180FPS MAX. Average is around 120. Now, it's crazy to assume that your computer can run it well. There were some parts where my computer would stutter, like some of the places where there were alot of exploding cans. 20 FPS might seem smooth to you, but that's not smooth to me. In closing, I can nuke your whole block.
Don't get me wrong guys. I don't dislike the game. I just think with the time they had they could have put out a better product.
k pun, your 5200 runs at 100fps with max settings? Dude, my A64 3000 clocked to 2.4ghz and x800 pro runs at like 50-100fps depending on whats going on.I'm running: 1600x1200, high shader, high textures, high models, all reflect, 6x AA, 16x AF (can't think of what else is in that screen). Needless to say, my vid card beats the hell out of yours and I'm getting less fps?
