June 5, 200520 yr http://home.comcast.net/~deovolenti/pictures/windtunnel.jpg I have two box-fans and no air-conditioning. What is the best way to cool my house? I spend most of the day in the living room, with spots of kitchen-ness, and the night is bedroom-time. My initial thought is to put one box-fan at Window B, facing into the house, and another at WIndow E, facing outside -- with only those two windows open. I was hoping this would create a mild wind-tunnel effect, sending a cool breeze through the house. My second thought was to open all five windows (A, B, C, D, E), placing the fans in the same place (B, E), both pointing inward, sending all the air into the living room and -- my hope, anyway -- out Windows C and D. Another wind tunnel effect. Do you see any better placement ideas? Given: Windows A, B, C, D, and E can be open or closed in any combination necessary. Archways G and H have no doors on them -- they are just entryways. Doorway F can be open or shut. Doorway I, I would prefer to be open at all times, because the restroom has no ventilation. And Doorway J I would prefer to be closed, as there is no screen on it, and many monsterous bugs and wasps hang around outside. So, what do you see as being my best chance of keeping my little house cool?
June 5, 200520 yr Box fans are ghetto, get A/C. You can get a cheap window unit and then place a fan in the room which can allow you to place a fan in the room blowing into a hall to cool all the other rooms. Believe me it works great, I used to have this set up. In your case I would say Kitchen so as not to have too much noise in bedroom when trying to sleep and cooling the living room most because it is nearest.
June 5, 200520 yr Cool it down at night is a biggie. Have the fans draw air in a push pull config all night. (A to E) Then during the day. The SHADY part of the house should be pulling the air into the house and the Sun side drawing it out. Use a push pull config to pressurize the airflow. We do this in the fire service. It is more effective to clear a house of smoke and heat using positive pressure ventiation..
