June 12, 200520 yr Hey yall, can anyone give me some suggestions on how to convince my parents to let me buy a new computer? I have the money in my bank account, plus I can sell my old computer to restock about half of that money....I am jobless as of yet (still just 15, should be getting a job in August). My mom said she doesnt want me to get one because all I will do on it is play more games and that that is a waste of time. This is the area I need the most help on, a retort for this. Anyone got some suggestions?
June 12, 200520 yr Say, something to the effect that it will help with school because it will run word and power point better, and if you decide to take some computer graphics classes or CAD classes it will enhance you ability to create better drawings. hope this helps. A good rule of thumb with parents make excuses that tailor to what they want. Like they want you to do well in school, well if it could be used for that, say it. Hopefully your parents dont know that much about computers.
June 12, 200520 yr Author They know enough to know that my computer right now will run anything I need for school just fine. I am kinda looking to become a programmer, but I dont have any demanding programs for that either....They know what I want it for.
June 12, 200520 yr tell them everyone else has one and the kids make fun of you because you lack processing power and your mobo isnt as big as the other kids

I am kinda looking to become a programmer, but I dont have any demanding programs for that either....They know what I want it for. 1. Show them how much of the respect Punisher gained when he upgraded his PC and became the most feared FA player Tell them that you need the same respect that they don't give you any and you have to look for it in virtual life. 2. Tell them that some Pole (i.e. me) laughs out loud at your equipment and claims he has better PC than you and it's really, really annoying to be worse than a Pole. 3. Show them all the answers to this thread and tell them how many of your friends really care about you, about your PC and how many of them came here to help you in this case. I think they will understand how it's important to you to have a new PC.
June 12, 200520 yr Author DH, though it made me laugh, I dont think my parents would go for that one. Bounty, they wouldn't go for the first 2, and the last one is doubtful also. Thanks tho. Keep em flowin.
June 12, 200520 yr i have similar parents.. this really frusterates me now that i already had $400 to spend, i got $300 more from comfirmation, and i still cant get any upgrades. things that need better computers other than gaming 1. Programming, if you want a speedy compile 2. any art, 2d photoshop, 3d cad, both greatly benefit from a better computer 3. video editing and encoding. using iMovie on a 700mhz G4 at school is no fun :/ 4. audio mixing, encoding etc. if u have a rock band going and experimenting with some home recordings, need a really good sound card. 5. just any multitasking also, try to show your parents how slow it takes to do everyday needs like checking email, word proccessing.
June 12, 200520 yr Author But see, my computer can do menial tasks like compile and check mail and the such with fine speed, it just cant run games. There inlies the problem. It is sufficient for most anything except games.
June 12, 200520 yr give up gaming, become a doctor and when your all growed up and rich buy what ever kinda computer you want
June 12, 200520 yr Author Guys really I am looking for constructive answers. I have the money to do this. I just have to convince my parents to let me.
June 12, 200520 yr Make them a deal. The same i did with my Mom. I made it to my High School - i got my first computer. I made it to University - i got replacement. Of course my Mom cursed the bet afterwards, but hey... it worked. Try to make a deal yourself. Especially if it concerns school and such, they should fall for it. Naive parents are... EDIT ...wait, You are saying that You have money... Tell them, that its Your money and You want to spend it that way... or buy it and give the parents the afterwards fact.
June 12, 200520 yr Author Theres no real deal I can make.....ya know. I do fine in school and the such. Ive already told them that its MY money....they dont really care
June 12, 200520 yr I was also doing good in school, and yet i got myself a deal. ...There can be no real retort to "You will be playing more games", becouse that is true. In this case You can find Yourself a Girlfriend, that loves computer games (they are hot, the chicks like that), move to Her house and then buy Her a computer for ... common purposes. Sooo romantic....
June 12, 200520 yr what the hell, why do you need to ask for your parents permission to buy a computer out of your money? :| Well, do what I did: My comp was really crappy. Even FA was slow, so I just showed my dad how slow my game was and that it wasnt supposed to be like that. But before you show your parents, go to a really big and detailed game, and set the video settings all to HIGH, ;]

But before you show your parents, go to a really big and detailed game, and set the video settings all to HIGH, ;'] I dont think my Mom would be impressed, that "look, i can set the details on HIGH and i get great performance". First off, She doesnt know crap about computer, much less games, second - She couldnt care less. Parents dont care.
June 12, 200520 yr Ask at your mom if you don't have a new one = 1) time to spend your time on the road with "bad boys"! 2) time to spend your time into "bar" to take drinks with frienship! 3) time to spend your time to find work and leave the "sweet house" to buy yourself a new one! 4) time to leave your mom for to find a rich girl or woman... 5) time to go around your country for to find money somewhere... Etc... Egidio.
June 12, 200520 yr ...There can be no real retort to "You will be playing more games", becouse that is true. If your parents claim you're playing 24/7 you can always say "I cannot play longer than that so what's a big deal with my new comp?" In this case You can find Yourself a Girlfriend, that loves computer games (they are hot, the chicks like that), move to Her house and then buy Her a computer for ... common purposes. Sooo romantic.... Or you can convince her to ask her parents if they can buy 'her' new PC. (I did that 10 years ago ). You got new PC and money on your bank account. Then you have to convince her to let you play 24/7... wait, it's much more harder than with the parents... (I tried to did that 10 years ago). Let's go back to: "how to convince my parents" thing... I think Ky had a point with a deal... Parents love that... They think you're so grown and responsible if you want to make a deal concerning you and your money... And you can still try to buy it in parts or (even better) wait til your PC-of-dreams will become a lot cheaper than it's now so it won't be a big deal then, b/c- I'm afraid to say- your top-shelf PC would become old and out-dated the same day you'd buy it...
June 12, 200520 yr Author yah, Ive been wanting to build this comp for about 9 months....I am tired of waiting.
June 12, 200520 yr How well are you doing in school? You said you're doing pretty well, maybe try using that as a point. If you're doing decent then tell them how it's not impacted your schoolwork. Make it be a kind of reward type thing for doing well. Though it all depends on how you're doing and what your parents think is well. Worked for me, then again i do have a 4.4 gpa and straight As so..... But still, if youre at least doing decent that might work.
June 12, 200520 yr Author I get straight A's.....its expected of me. Got a 29 on the ACT...maybe I can use those on them. Good suggestion. Keep em comin.
June 12, 200520 yr I get straight A's.....its expected of me. Haha, sounds like my parents. I think id be shot if i got anything lower. So maybe try the since Im doing well why does it really matter how much im on the computer approach. Hope it works for ya.
June 13, 200520 yr Hmm.... tell 'em you need it because otherwise GoL isn't going to do good in GvG's, Because your SOOO important /sarcasm (LOL messing with you sneaky) Serriously, throw out the grades at them. If your doing fine in school, i wouldn't see why not. Right now i'm saving up for a video card, and i need to convince my parrents to let me get it =P Except i'm not the brightest crayon in the box when it comes to school *lol*
