July 4, 200520 yr Yes good movie good effects. Strange ending where Tom Cruises ex and her family were living and it looked like no aliens or anything touched them. Not a scratch on them, I didn't think that made sense. Also, when they figured out how the aliens were destroyed some dummy behind me was so loud I couldn't hear the exact explanation but I assume it is something to do with birds/organisms?
July 4, 200520 yr I posted a topic on another board, here's the post: I've just returned from my local theatres first showing of War of the Worlds, and I must say, this has to be the best sci-fi movie I've seen in recent memory. The first thing that struck me was that this movie was scary. Not because of pop-ups or monsters, but because of how real Spielberg protrays the situation that humanity is it. Now, I'm not refering to the massive mechanical alien death machines, those are clearly 100% science fiction (duh) but I'm talking about the human-human situations. Spoilers for a bit here, so please do not read on if you have yet to see the movie. An example would be the scene at the ferry docks, where they're driving in the van. The crowd is very 'calm' at first, just yelling and such, but grow more violent, until people start pulling guns out. Then, somebody takes it, but is shot himself. That scene showed off the basic barbaric instinct of survival people have in the worst case scenario. It really creeped me out, because this is what would actully be happening. And then just after that, on the boat, people are scrambling all over the place, hoping to get onto the boat. It's the true 'every man for himself' idea. But what really creeped me out was when they looked out onto the hills with the massive machines just burning people. It WAS really freaky and it felt really real. I can't explain it any other way. Creepy because it was real. Besides that, the movie had a great feel to it. It always seemed like they (main characters) were on the run and humanity was really getting wipped out (the scene with in the news truck when the reporter showed him the video of that city getting wasted by all those machines was really cool and gave it a really epic sense). The battle scene (if you can call it that) was also pretty cool. I would've liked to see more machines vs the army instead of just seeing the army shoot. But when the machines moved over the hill and just wipped out everything, I felt a sense of hopelessness, it's like nothing could take them down, and I was really bummed by that. Of course, I was laughing finally when they were able to blow the ******* out of one of the machines near the end. Probably the only thing I found missing explaination there was why were their shields suddenly down? I don't think they explained it, and I don't think the machine's shields would go down just because the aliens inside caught the flu. Anyway, it was an awesome movie, I definatly recommand it to everyone who's got the cash to see it.
July 4, 200520 yr Caste, the machines die when exposed to a virus. I believe it was carried by the birds.
July 4, 200520 yr they all died because they couldnt adapt to the microbes/bacteria in our atmosphere. i didnt like this movie. didnt see how it could get 4 stars. this also confuses me: this was planned for 1 million years, to completly annihiliate mankind. so of those 1 million years, they could not do any research, couldnt send in a few guinea pigs to see if the environment is suitable? and what was with tom trying to take the shotgun out of the guys hand in the basement? or was he trying to kill him? also i found it funny, tom cruise is an ******* on screen and in real life.
July 4, 200520 yr and what was with tom trying to take the shotgun out of the guys hand in the basement? or was he trying to kill him? he didn't want the guy to shoot the aliens because one of them might get away and alert the other machines, or the sound might alert the other machines alltogehter
July 4, 200520 yr Author he didn't want the guy to shoot the aliens because one of them might get away and alert the other machines, or the sound might alert the other machines alltogehter There were four aliens and one shotgun. Not sure about you, but I would definitely hold my fire unless attacked. Tom did not want to risk his daughter's life. this also confuses me: this was planned for 1 million years, to completly annihiliate mankind. so of those 1 million years, they could not do any research, couldnt send in a few guinea pigs to see if the environment is suitable? I'm sure every level of intelligence follies greatly at points. By the way, did anyone else think of HL2 when you saw the tripod being destroyed by all of the AT missiles? That was a cool scene.
July 4, 200520 yr By the way, did anyone else think of HL2 when you saw the tripod being destroyed by all of the AT missiles? That was a cool scene. yeah, I thought about striders for a second, then just forgot about it.Although they do have a weird resemblance, War of the Worlds was written about 100 years ago
