Ok, so BF2 hates me and locks up every single i join a server.

I had it working for a about a week on the 1.01 patch with out too many lockups. In order for it to work I had to:

- turn off all other programs that may have been running including my avast anti-virus (made me feel uneasy playing).

- change the connection speed from T1 to 256k or better

- empty out my temp folder

- empty out my doc/settings folder

- turn off the voice enable options in the audio section.

- set effects to low

- turn off anti-aliasing

- turn off dynamic lighting

- turn off dynamic shadowing

I have a amd 3200+ on a nvidia nforce4/ultra mb

1.0 gigs of kingston ram

msi 6600 pci-e

I normally get 90-150fps in css, but for some reason bf2 wont work for anything. I have searched the ea support pages and pretty much done what they suggested. (above).

I was wondering if any of you computer genius's had any ideas for me? Computers ain meh specialty.

Thanks,

uninstall reinstall w/o patch same settings

cant even join server.

uninstall reinstall + patch same settings

plays for 10 minutes locks up

disterbing.

Kinda pissed i spent 53 bucks.

Updated drivers for everything? I mean everything. Like go through graphics, motherboard, audio(even if theyre built into the motherboard theres probably newer versions than what's included in the compiled thing for the motherboard), anything you can think of. The audio is what fixed my problems and Ive seen similar posts about the audio being a problem.
After uninstalling and rebooting, are it's original folders remaining with any files ? Delete all related folders and run registry fixer/cleaner. Maybe video drivers need uninstall from add/remove, reboot, reinstall drivers in use when it worked decent. I've had cases where files stay behind in windows\system folder that were causing probs. Only way I realized it was tried all other options and was checking dates of files in there and saw some with date of probs starting. Was able to determine from their properties and such they were related to software or hardware prob. So I delete them but leave in trash bin incase need to put them back. These were video driver related. Then installing older better video driver was successful. So i empty trash bin.
definatly sounds like drivers. many of the games built within the last year dont fully support pci-e cards... included css (green tinge on weapon models in dark). farcry also was anti pci-e for many months intill drivers and patches were released. now like torch said, update everything, including your mobo drivers. the fact that you have to change audio settings sounds like your comp isnt supporting it. oh yeah, i had to install the drivers on the bf2 cd for nvidia, even thought the ones on the nvidia site were newer, i still had issues. so try rolling those back to the ones on the cd.

did you buy it at costco... everywhere else its 59.99$ canadian :D

i updated all the drivers afik, i may have not updatd the mobo. All the other drivers were up to date with teh exception of my video driver. I updated it and the restarted my computer.

When I started up in multiplayer I got a prompt saying I need to updated the latest nvidia drivers. WTF? lol. I will try uninstalling everything and deleting all the folders (had not done that)

I really think its my audio too, because it was not working at all what so ever when i used the voip in the audio options. When that was turned off the game ran for a week or so with out problems.

kad ... didnt know taht was why there was a geen tint on my famas D:!

Thanks for the help, as soon as I get home I'm going to attempt to fix this. <3 bf2 just cant play it :\

i got that with my AGP radeon 9800xt
Also, the single player is fine. Runs perfectly, but online is jacked.

Firewall issue? Port blocked? If singleplayer runs fine, that would seem to limit the driver issue. Your rig sounds very close to mine.

well I uninstalled again then reinstalled making sure there was no bf2 after the uninstall

after the reinstall I disabled the viop and the other audio option. left all the settings default, changed my map to follow player and changed the connection speed to 256 or >

The game runs fine for 10 - 15 minutes with no lag or anything then locks up.

This is NOT a patched version.

eeeeppspspepepepepe :X

connections issues?

firewall/anti-virus/background tasks = off

Have you tried both the newest nvidia drivers on their site and also the ones that come on the cd?

Also, whered you get your computer. Custom built or from a company? Thisll help to see if we can get your audio working. Also, is the sound in a separate card thats in a pci slot or is it right on the motherboard? My guess is it's related to audio drivers, and we need to figure out what you have to get those updated.

Also, you said you have an nForce4 motherboard. Do you have an ADM64 processor or just an AMD Athlon XP?

Try this, should allow us to figure out what all you have and then you wont have to go through all those other things I asked. :o

1. Go to Start>Run and type in dxdiag

2. Let it load (loading bar in bottom left) then hit save all information.

3. Save that file wherever, just somewhere you can remember.

4. Upload that file somewhere, or just post the file here. It's gonna be long so Im not sure if it will fit in a post.

I have tried the nvidia drivers on the nvidia site and the drivers on th disk to no avial. This is a custom build with the sound card built into the mobo.

windows xp svc pack 2

amd

I will try what you suggested when I get home and post it here. Thanks again for the support guys.

<3 the armory.

Some games have probs with mobo sound chips, I've learned in past. Adding a cheap sound card and disabling mobo sound chips in bios, solved those probs for me in past.

Is your ethernet network chipset built into mobo also, or a plugin card ?

Some mobo network chip sets don't work as well with other devices as a plugin netcard would.

Check your hardware in control panel/system/device manger. I'm wondering if more then one device is sharing same irq, com, or dma with your network card, only causing probs when using internet. Look at sound devices and network device.

You may have more devices then you need like com ports loaded in your device manager. You may need to remove something to free up an irq mobo channel. Check that you don't have more things then you need turned on in bios.

First download and intall these drivers. They're for your motherboard. Make sure to restart after installing them. But do NOT install the network management thingy. It comes up as a separate box part of the way through the installation.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_winxp32_amd_6.66.html

Then install these drivers. They are for the updated sound, hoopefully itll fix your problems.

Let us know if it works.

ty torch for all your help. I did as you said, then also dl'd the 1.02 hotfix for bf2.

game ran for oh 10 minutes then locked up again.

Upon restart I started up my started my nvidia monitor view to check if my cpu was getting too hot while playing bf2. ( cant think of anything else )

cpu 27 c

system 37 c

gpu 46 c

check the sound button for overtemp alert and joined a bf2 1.02 server.

locked up right after I chose my class and was looking for a squad to join.

I never heard an overtemp alert.

I

dont

get

it.

I appreciate your help, but wth dood. bf2 is the busted for me.

I was tinkering with the nvidia nv mixer option on the new drivers and got this.

I dont like computers and I'm far too old and too stupid to figure out this totally..

Hmm.. Tek, youre making me run out of ideas here :o

Really though, Im pretty lost as to what could be causing it. When you say it locks up what happens? Is it a black screen, game just freezes? When it does, can you Ctrl+alt+del it to get out or do you have to manually restart your computer? Is it still doing it only in multiplayer or both multi and single?

Youve got me to the point that my curiousity is kicking in and wondering what is going on over there. I can keep digging out obscure attempts to fix it if you want to keep trying.

  • Author

sure man keep trying.

i havent tried single player in a while, just multiplayer.

The game runs for 10minutes usually without any problems, then, out of nowhere, the game locks up and freezes.

I can see the entire environment I just cant move or anything. There is sound (looping) but I cant alt + tab or cntl + alt + del. I have to turn off my computer in the back and restart it that way.

Could it be internet connection? I run teh net on a crappy linksys router connected directly to my cpu.

I suppose I could try takin off the router and running the game directly from my dsl modem.

/me cries.

Taking it off the router shouldnt affect anything. However it does seem that it is something wrong with the internet. I was doing some searching on some BF2 sites and it seems theres a lot of people that are having similiar issues and it's related to network and punkbuster. So we're going to try updating punkbuster :o

Download this file. Then move the file to your Progam Files/EA Games/Battlefield 2/pb folder. Then run the file once it's in there.

Also are you using the network port built-in to the motherboard?

  • Author

Gotta be the net dood. I just played singleplayer for an hour or so. No issues soon as I connect to multiplayer, BAM! lockup.

I will do. Is punkbuster like cheating death or something?

-e-

here goes nothing :o

-e-

well, It worked for longer then it has in a very long time. I was able to run it for 30 minutes or so. Joined midway through a round was able to finish the round then join the next round for bout 10 minutes or so. Then el locko.

I'll keep searching for some answers.

-e-

Been searching the bf2 planet forums. It seems that its punk buster. I tried the fix 2x, but the game still crashes. I am bout to play in a non-pb server and see how it goes.

-e-

no punk buster servers are up ... go figure. I'm 90% sure pb is the culprit. :o

"I used to get the same error in BFV with my old computer. The problem was my video card, sound card, and onboard ethernet card were all running offf the same IRQ, and the data was colliding. I bet if you check you'll see the same thing," bf2 forums.

How do I check if this is the issue?

I not sure about winxp. In win98se you check devices and the irqs they using, in device manager, in system, in control panel, in settings, from start button.
