K, well I still cant get this game to run for longer then 10 minutes without freezing. I have tried everything my non-computer oriented mind could think of.

I recently reformatted, I updated my mobo, sound card and video card with nvidias latest drivers.

I have updated punkbuster and dl the tool so that pb will automatically update.

(In game I pulled down the console and saw that pb violations = 0. Should be no problem there.)

I have turn off anti-virus and background tasks.

I turned off filtering and shading, put effects and graphics on low.

I changed the connection speed to 256k or >.

I turned my sound accelleration to basic/off (both) and disabled the VoIP.

I even contacted ea and talked with a tech support guy. Course he didnt want to wait 10 minutes for the game to lock up, so when I was talking with him he said everything was running well.

His advice was to check that all my ports were open. So I did. I contacted my provider and sure nuff,

The ports for Battlefield 2 are as follows:

UDP ports:

*

27900

*

29900

*

29910

*

27901

*

55123

*

55124

*

55215

*

16567

*

1500-4999

TCP ports:

*

80

*

29900

*

29901

*

29920

*

28910

*

4711

were open. There's a surprise.

The damn game still locks up after 10 minutes of multiplayer. Any ideas at all?

I can post more info bout this cuz i tinkered for weeks it seems now. :(

Once, when I hit ctl + alt + del, my task manager appeared and I saw that bf2 was using something like 534,000k of memory. My cpu usage was a 10 % or so.

It must be a hardware issue. 10 mins even 20 consistently is sounding more like it all the time.

I would borrow a different videocard or buy one from bestbuy ( just to return it :( )

All possibilities must be explored.

When you lock up.

What is your system temp.?

Download and run motherboard monitor. Configure it and run it while you run BF2 and see if you are experiencing voltage drops, overheating or fans turning off.

Could be a PS rail getting overjuiced or your CPU getting too hot or your vidcard doing the same.

on board ethernet

I finally found a non-punkbuster server with ppl in it. I was able to play for an hour and a half w/o locking up. I had all my settings on medium except dynamic lighting and the shader option which was turned off.

Also, there was only 6 ppl at any one time in this server.

I joined another server with punkbuster and about 10-12 ppl in it and was able to play for bout 15 minutes til it froze up again.

gtfo punkbuster???

Seems PB is the issue. And I have heard that PB doesnt like some integrated ethernet controllers. Know a friend that has a PCI ethernet card you could borrow for a bit?

That's my guess as to what the issue is since you can play in the non-PB servers fine. That's almost always caused by the network card not agreeing with Punkbuster. If you dont have a friend. I would consider just buying one, they're not very expensive and im pretty sure that's the problem.

That is what I was thinking. I have had problems with the nforce ethernets b4.

Also there is a PB manual update.

Put a post about how to manually update PB.

Indeed deth,

I manually updated pb 4 times. Suppose I can get a new ethernet card D:

Mebbe I'll just wait out another pb update?

Doubtful itll help as PB is updated every patch, and i think, even more often. It seems it's something related to the actual hardware so that'll take a lot longer for them to track down the problem and fix it.

Cards are like 10-15 in a store. So if you feel like playing BF2, then I think you might want to give that a go. If that doesnt fix it (hopefully it will) then you can always return the card. Id suggest sticking with one of the name brand cards, as long as you do that theres not a lot of difference.

Plus the nforce ethernet can be a little finicky other times too and supposedly it uses a little CPU power also. So having a separate card has its advantages.

bought a 14 dollar card, installed it, dled new drivers for it, started up bf2 played for 10 minutes, it locked, I picked up my cpu, walked to the window, and tossed it out.

:( I am so lost now.

I have via mobo in pc2. Had probs with built in ehternet and sound long ago. Put $10 netcard in and $10 used Soundblaster16 sound card from place that takes trade-ups. Noticed irq conflict still with net & sound. But now I was able to reconfigure that away. Was also finally able to get microphone working.

As to video drivers. Stay away from updates. Use either what came with vid card or preferrably from proper folder on bf2 cd for your specific vid make and win sys.
