Posted July 26, 200520 yr Discovery lifted off on time, and problem free. Everything went perfectly and she is on orbit, and preparing for the 2 day journey to the International Space Station. Total mission time, 12 days. Watched the live feed, from Nasa, online, and it was great, and somewhat emotional... God speed, and a safe return. TFD
July 26, 200520 yr I woke up to the news this morning and was quite ecstatic. When it comes to space, only the Russians can compare to our gung-ho, balls to the wall attitude. Next stop, the moon.... again! Godspeed guys
July 26, 200520 yr I think the Russians are a lot more gung-ho than NASA is. Like, a couple of months ago the probe that had the solar sails attached didn't work and they lost it. With NASA, they would've had a 9 month investigation and lots of government examination, but the Russians simply picked up the pieces and are going at it again. Anyway, glad to see it got of good. I was wondering what would happen to NASA if this didn't go well.
July 26, 200520 yr is this why when i woke up this AFTERNOON( ), this is my desktop? :? i was wondering why my dad mightve changed it. /monthly_06_2011/post-760-130810174901_thumb.jpg
July 27, 200520 yr Did the crew have a mission this time? When the shuttle crashed last time they were going up just to go up...what a waste.
July 27, 200520 yr nice resolution steveo... I think the mission of this crew is to go to the Spacestation and drop off supplies and repairs and such. I also heard that they're going to the moon, but im not sure
July 27, 200520 yr Author Yes, taking supplies, a replacement gyro something , and cargo storage platform to the international space station, and to test out numerous new on orbit shuttle self inspection and repair techniques. And on the Columbia mission, your statement is very incorrect. There were numerous scientific projects and test they did, and if I'm not mistaken, I believe they either serviced, or deployed a satallite as well. TFD
July 27, 200520 yr replacement gyro something Gyro a.k.a. gyroscope. Nifty device (using moments of momentum) for plane-orientation.Looks like something fell of the plane during launch. At least somebody saw it this time BEFORE reentry.
July 27, 200520 yr Author At least somebody saw it this time BEFORE reentry. They saw the cause of the problems the last time, although didn't have a clear picture, they didn't think it was a flight risk, and really had no other alternative than a reentry. No means of a rescue, a limited supply of fuel and food, and no ability to either make it to the space station (fuel), or dock with it (only shuttle not equipped with a docking collar) if they could have made it. July 28, 200520 yr Why is a shuttle lift off so exciting? Haven't the U.S. done this before? its the first one since one esploded
July 28, 200520 yr Looks like something fell of the plane during launch. Yeah, It's supposedly no big deal. They will be able to return home safely NASA spent a billion dollars to correct what happened to columbia, now they are gonna ground all future space flights because they still dont know whats going wrong(something bout the foam flying off). Good Luck to the Discovery crew, Its a long trip back.
July 28, 200520 yr Those heat shield tiles are very vulnerable to being dislodged. They have to find better "superglue" or whatever. Previous sorrow is result of insulation of all things, during liftoff, hitting crucial tile and knocking it off. Causing overheating during re-entry. Some tiles have often been lost but rarely crucial position ones til then.
July 29, 200520 yr I have held a heat shield tile. My Cousin was an Artist for NASA. She had access to just about everywhere. She made a deal with some technician. The tile was white. Had the consistsency of very fine sand (Gritty) held together like styrofoam. But guess what....... Lighter than Styofoam. :peace: No one is supposed to have any but you know how that goes. What I can't ( Well really I can ) believe is that they spent the money and did not fix the insulation problem on the external fuel tank and keep, the stuff from falling off.
July 29, 200520 yr NASA got underfunded. Other matters are more important now than some space conquest. With this - Bush's dreams of Moon and Mars are gonna blow up like space shuttles. If it didnt cost lives, then it wouldve been funny.
