email question

Today I went to REregister at BFII Tracker. I needed a new email so I used one that I created about 1 year ago because I am allowed 10 emails on my Shaw account. This email has never been used. So, I activated it in my Outlook Express so it would include this mail when checking for new messages. It had 1995 emails waiting when I pressed send and receive. Can anyone explain this from an address that I have never used. They were all junk mail.
