I do the vidieo tapeing for my sisters marching band, in the band there is a german exchange student. she asked me to make a copy of one of the compition vidieos i took so she could send it home to her parents, however she said that DVD made here in america wont work in germany... so i have two questions

why won't they work?

and how do i burn a one that will work in germany?

i use Nero to do my buring.

You need to change the DVD region.

You can do this only so many times with players. I am not sure about software.

OK.

Go to your device manager.

Select hardware.

Find your DVD drive and goto properties.

Change the region to Germany.

Burn the videos.

Change the region back.

i have another DVD buring question. How can you get around the copy protection on the newer DVDs the come out? As in how can i burn them off my comp and make them work?
that's illegal my good friend

If you sale them then yes it is illegal. If you have a backup copy of something you legally own you may still be commiting a civil violation (not criminal) meaning they would have to file a civil law suit which does not involve law enforcement. If you were to copy something then sale it then you could be charged under criminal statues in Federal and most state courts.

So when somone says illegal that is not always what you think of as criminal.

BTW there is still a very gray area as to if backing up your own stuff is a violation of the civil rules of law. The MPAA would argue that you have to break the encryption which would be a violation of the civil section. The other side would argue fair use just as was argued during the early BetaMax and VCR days.

It boils down to the MPAA wants you to pay for a movie over and over again even though you have gotten it legally already. If you have a backup then you will not need to rebuy from them. Thats my two cents on the issue anyway.

Changing regions on your DVD drive will work, but you usually have a limited number of times that it will allow you to do that, so use them wisely.

oh my god, don't do that!

you have an odd-numbered limit. most XP systems give you either 3 or five. if you screw up, you're stuck in germany for the rest of your computer's life.

find a burning program that will do region-free.

DVD region for germany is "2-PAL" like for all euro countries.

DVD usa is "1-NTSC" and Japan is "2-NTSC" don't make the mistake between the 2 Japan and the 2 euro...

Like Klif typed, you have 3 to 5 possibility to change your "region" on your dvd writer after, it do to return to the factory or reflash his bios for to set at 5 again: when it work?

But, before to make the dvd, ask her if the dvd reader can read multiregion dvd or unzoned dvd (or free-regions) else you do to write it in "2 pal zone(area)".

Egidio.

DVD drives are inexpensive.

$25 American

Come to think of it.

If you are into this. Just get a new drive every so often.

I think changing the region is firmware based on the DVD drive and after so many changes can not be set back. No matter how cheap they are it is just easier to burn it with dvdshrink and make it region free and play that copy. Mac are you sure a firmware wipe would work to reset the number of region changes you have again? I didnt think that would work but I have never tried it so I cant say for sure.

As far as buying DVD roms cheap Mac is right, they are around $20 but if you put another few dollars with it you can have a really nice burner.

This is the one I have and it runs around $45 and will burn almost every format out there to include being a CD burner. It is also a name brand.
