Linux vs Windows

Howdy

For those who know abit about Linux, can you please tell me the differences between Linux and Windows, this means things like the installation of software, hardware compatability etc etc

thanx :D

Lets just say you better be willing to learn if you got to linux. I suggest putting it on an extra system. The requirements are very low so almost anything will run it. That is the way I am learning.

You could do a dual boot but I wouldnt bother.

well i have installed Windows 2000 Server in a Linux box but i need to know abit more about Linux (for an assessment).

the linux file system structure is quite different from windows. you also have to be more comfortable using commands (similar to dos commands) if you want to install things. Linux is becoming more compatible with hardware and you can most often find drivers everything now. there are many different distrubutions of linux, some easier, some harder to use.

if you are using linux for the first time, i suggest this distrubution:

it is fairly simple to use, easy to install, and with a few online tutorials, you'll be a linux pro in no time.

Check with Fatman or Jasun they are the two Linux Gurus I know around here. There maybe more...I wish I could tell you more but I am learning myself.

Difference?

Linux is free, Windows is not... theoretically.

Linux is hard to learn, Windows is not... theoretically.

Linux is mostly incompatible right now with many usefull applications and drivers (You have to write them Yourself :D ), Windows is... theoretically.

Linux is for little fat men with thick glasses, who haven't seen the sunlight since they were born, Windows is for idiots... all theoretically. :p

ubuntu isnt that bad, its fairly simple, all you have to do is read up on how to install new programs.
