Well first you need to download Resource Hacker from this site and scroll down

http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

Then you need to go into your windows directory "C:\WINDOWS\" and make a copy of "explorer.exe" and name it "explorer.bak", then make another copy of "explorer.exe" and name it something like "newstartbutton" just so you can remember what copy you made the changes on. The reason you make two copies is if you botch the changed one you have a clean copy to undo any changes.

Now, with the copies made, open your named copy of explorer in ResHacker, expand the string table "folder", then expand folder 37 and click on resource 1033. (38 if your running XP in classic theme) Now where it say "start" in quotes on the first line of code for me its 578, inside the quotes is what the button will say, there is no character limit, however it does take up taskbar space the longer it is. After you have your desired text inside the quotes, click on compile script. Now while your inside windows you can also change the "tool tip" which is the text that appears when you rest your mouse over the button for a time. Expand folder 34 and click on Resource 1033, now where it says "click here to start" or something like that, for me its line 533 and type whatever you want, I have "If you need this text you do not need to be sitting here." After that has been changed click complie script, and exit.

Now restart into safe mode with command prompt using your Administrator account. After that boots up start typing this without the quotes of course

"cd c:\Windows"

"copy c:\windows\newstartbutton.exe c:\windows\explorer.exe"

type "yes" to the overwrite question

"shutdown -r" now don't let the window that says you have "X" ammount of seconds to save whatever scare you. Let it countdown and restart.

And Congratulations your start button has been changed.

Nice instructions Deli. Thanks for taking the time to type them for everyone. Should be useful for other stuff too.

Your welcome Mac, there are also ways to replace the windows icon next to the text in your start button, and to also change the colors of the button. When I figure out how to do these I will post some more instructions...so stay tuned.
