March 16, 200620 yr They can overheat from age and/or being asked too much of or air high humidity increasing risk of "shorting" inside ... because ... they are transformers that use many fine wire windings of thinly insulated wires around an insulated electrical conductor (like a shaft or smaller or bigger coil of wire depending whether the transformance is higher or lower voltage) ... to create strong electro-magnetic field around an insulated central pin conductor that recieves this strong mag field and if connected to a conducting circuit (loop) of wire will have electrical (atom electron exchange)(current movement) who's amount is direct result of the ratio between windings of feed coil and windings of recieve coil. In other words (more primary windings to less secondary windings) ... if either coil of windings gets too hot, the wires in one spot start to glow and melt into wires beside them. as a result, instead of power going thru all the coil, it gets to the melt point, maybe halfway, thus having only have the power transfer intended. it may still be enough to run the car engine or pc, but when put under load of stepping on gas, climbing hill, running bf2, the power need may no longer be there ... this is when gas motor misfires from weak sparks at plugs...or pc freezes ... "nay the force be with you" lol ... check and see if "the force is with you".
