you get a choice of a number of things. depending on the rank.

for instance when you rank up for the first time to private. you get a choice of

squad leader beacon, grenades, ummmm i forget the rest. but different things for different classes etc.

Little off topic but POST NUMBER 300! lol

you have to start at the bottom of the unlock trees and work your way up, it takes 4 unlocks to get a new gun if you use the same path everytime.

I found it really worth it to work towards the extra grenades. 1 extra nade is worth it you will see. The first few ranks fly by very fast.

First 3 MUST HAVE unlocks are Nades, Energy REgen, and the faster Sprint. Then go any way you want. Equipment that seems good are....

1) Both Assault guns peaple like, although most peaple get the Voss

2) If you want to play Engineer, the Pilum AVR and Motion mines are the bread and butter of this kit. This means you will probably have to unlock almost the whole kit to get both.

3) The Recon kit has what "Special Forces" brance and the "Sniper" brance. The SF brance gives you a decent carbine (Lambert) that some peaple like, but I'm not terribly impressed with.

Make sure you use your "Field Upgrade" ability in game to test your next unlock before you unlock it for real. Anytime you are in a squad and you stick together, your squad will get points that eventually unlock these field upgrades and let you test one of your next choices for as long as you are logged into the server. This will give you the chance to try these upgrades without wasting a real unlock one something you just can't roll with.

I'm thinking of going for the extra pistol/SMG ammo next. I play alot of Engineer and I'm actually getting pretty good with the SMG... but man I run out of ammo alot. If I go that route tho, I might as well go for the extra grenades after that. There's been too many times I wish I had more nades of any kind.
