Intel's New 80-Core Processor

Featured Replies

Running at 3.16 GHz, the new chip achieves 1.01 teraflops of computation--an efficiency of 16 gigaflops per watt. It can run even faster, but loses efficiency at higher speeds, performing at 1.63 teraflops at 5.1 GHz and 1.81 teraflops at 5.7 GHz.

lol that's pretty quick.

80 cpus on a wafer the size of a postage stamp.....wow...i mean seriously, holy freakin crap...

thats just plain rediculous...not to mention, its only using 62 watts! my 2 core cpu is using more than that!

as far as processing power...your talking like hundreds of desktops.

i just wanna know what kind of memory bus its dealing with...just to be able to supply enough memory bandwidth so that individual cpus arent starved, not to mention just the amount of physical memory needed....thats just mind boggling

It's kind of silly...we barely utilize dual-core...and the quadcore barcelona from AMD looks pretty sick but its way above anything consumers come close to using...and 80cores...yea it'll cost like 30mill for productions and in about ...20-30 or so years we'll be able to utilize em ..hehe

I think we're entering the world of virtualization where one computer will play the roles of several. We're talking about virtualizing our server equipment now where one VMware ESX server runs as five real ones.
