Wampsville (WSYR-TV) - Emergency crews are responding to the railroad tracks in Wampsville, Madison County, where a tanker car exploded around 7 AM. Residents living near the explosion are being evacuated, and Durhamville Elementary and North Broad Street Schools are closed.

A caller says the explosion is located behind the Wal-Mart on Route 5.

Students who have already been picked up by their buses are being taken to Oneida High School.

There have been no reports of injuries.

Residents living several miles away from the explosion said they could feel it.

Black smoke continues to billow into the air. Stay with 9WSYR.COM and NewsChannel 9 for updates throughout the morning.

Must have been some nasty stuff in that tanker for them to evac that many people... :D

Not a good sign... :D

just basicly fueloil

That's just what they're telling you... Heh.

Maybe they are just worried about smoke inhalation issues then.

no it is a precautionary to evacuate half a mile around a fuel tanker fire..

imagine putting a deoderant can on a fire.... this is a 22thousand gallon version of that.. if it gets hot enough and goes up itll go off like a rocket and or explode.. and if it does pop itll take down a good % of everything within about a quater mile

Oh, That's where I put my laughing gas!

I was wondering where that train wondered off to.

It was in the news all day plus the traffic in Rome was heavy due to the rerouting of the thruway signs all over the place telling people where to go. Good to see you weren't affected by it

Man, not that it's a good thing, but I wish I could go play! I'm HAZ-Mat tech level A certified.... That would be fun...!
