I was really surprised that it was an Asian that did this. Isn't it usually some mixed-up redneck white-dude that does this sort of thing in U.S.??? All the warning signs were there yet the FBI and local police could not touch him or question him until a violent act had been commited or a fully qualified threat had been written down. Suggestive writings are not enough to warrant questioning or acting upon a potentially distrubing act suich as this. The shooter shielded himself behind the 1st Amendment. What did the victims have to shield themselves with? Our Constitution is to blame and yet not also. We all have it in us to do crazy things or 'snap', but generally people have enough rational thought to not do such crazy things. On the other hand........this guy was clearly displaying anti-social behavior and the masses that had their lives at risk.................they should have put him down like a sick dog. Lynch-mob justice???? Maybe, but the judicial system prevents people from taking their security into their own hands even when the FBI and local Police had their chances to intervene before an incident occured. I am a man of peace and liek to avoid violence, but I also know how to defend myself and my family if needed. It is like the military in peace time> "While we are not at war, we must alway train as if we are at war.".....................this sounds pretty darn sensible to me. The story could have been: "South Korean-born student missing and presumed dead. Students at V.T. suspected. Case left as unsolved." I could live with that story as opposed to this one. What can we do as people to help change gun laws and other laws that could have helped prevent this from happening? Keep in mind tht people kill people, not guns. Keep inmind that even without a gun, thi guy had documentation an dmaterials used to make IED's. If it was going to happen, it was going to happen one way or another. Eyes are much wider open today on this. Keep safe everyone!

I just scanned over the posts, but my take on this is this situation

1) People get shocked, horrified, ect

2) We'll start blaming the gun culture, video games, immigrants, the government, parents, teachers, President Bush, global warming, El Nino, hurricane Katrina, and various other conspiracy theories.

3) Several artists will write songs about it

4) Politicians will beat their chests and start passing stupid laws that don't accomplish anything

5) American's everywhere will notice the newest article in the tabloids about Anna Nicole Skank's second cousin's dog's drug habit and how it killed the wench and everybody will forget about the incident.

End of story.

I'm not racist.... I just hate the whole damn human race. That absolute most idiotic lifeform on the planet.

he probably couldnt handle the pressure and mental abuse from his college mates and done this act. It's sad the campus police and the college community didnt take action fast enough, the 2nd shooting could of been avoided.

well this is why guns should be banned throughout the usa. people who obtain permits and have registered weapons should only carry them.

"Law enforcement officials told Williams that Cho was carrying a backpack that contained receipts for the purchase of a Glock 9mm pistol in March. As a permanent legal resident, Cho was eligible to buy a handgun unless he had been convicted of any felony criminal charges."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18148802/?GT1=9246

why do young people need to carry weapons for?

I'm trying to be nice about this whole issue. It's sad that this incident happened, and my heart goes out to all students and faculty that lost their lives in a senseless killing spree.

I hate when people say the words too bad campus police or the police department couldn't have acted faster to avoid this whole thing.

What people don't seem to realize is it is very hard to be everywhere at once. How on a large campus like this one would you be able to prevent this type of thing? I mean 2 people are shot, so police respond to investigate and see if they can find the guilty party. While they are investigating, he goes to another part of the campus and starts shooting people. In the middle of all this, you got mass hysteria from all the students now trying to run away. All this happens in a matter of minutes including the gunman shooting all those people. You are not going to stop someone like that. Now, many of you are going to Monday night quarterback this and say, well I would have at least tried to subdue him. Yeah right! All those students and faculty were unarmed. An unarmed person is not going to take on an armed gunman, not in real life. What most of those people were thinking was I gotta get away before he points that gun at me. It's natural human instinct. "Protect you and yours". Nobody is going to blame them. I'll finish my little spiel further down. I'm not picking on you Impact, just stating my opinion on your post.

to get a permit for a weapon usually takes weeks if not months where they do a background check and so forth. He was a young student with a green card they would of never givin him a weapons permit. :)

when i mentioned guns should be banned, I ment they shouldn't be allowed to be bought just like that. People should have the proper credentials to make that kind of purchase. weapons shouldn't be sold to students in this case.

Yes, in New York state you need to get a pistol permit to carry a handgun. It takes up to 6 months to get one with a thorough background check on you. They don't just hand these things out like candy. VA on the other hand you don't. So my answer would be get stricter gun laws in VA. Why anyone should be able to walk in to any pawnshop or gun shop and buy a handgun off the shelf is beyond me. That law would definitely be a problem. Just any psycho can buy a gun. How safe is that???

Yeah is sad how many attacks you got in schools! When the autorities is going to do something to prevent that?Curios!

:( -It is a poor state of affairs' date=' but it is hard to control as well. If a kid can not get a gun his uncle might have one around. The government will be unwilling to fund metal detectors and some sort of ISF in EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL...we got that war ya know :) . This is an issue that will [b']not [/b]be solved, ever. Theories are nice on paper, but nothing is foolproof, lets face it we have some skilled fools in this great U.S. of ours. It is a sad truth, and hard for most to accept. Crisis management is how we operate here, preventive measures cost money and may never be used (capitalism at its worst).

-Example, SitRep, whateva' : there are 19,000+ high schools alone in the US (National Center for Education Statistics). I would suspect it would cost millions to cover them all adequately (assumed at a few thousand per school, sans upkeep costs). There is an average of five school shootings, with multiple victims, per year (2004 NY Times, close as I could find). In the spenders eyes (yes...the ones that spend our tax money) this would be a huge waste of recourses that could be "better spent elsewhere". 5 of 19000 is what the people we vote for call "acceptable losses".

Should we have metal detectors in schools? Yes, but there are problems with this.

1. Metal detectors would have to be at all entrances and exits to the buildings. Doors should be locked except for the main entrance to the building.

2. In order for them to be effective you would have to man them at all times. Reason: Because I'm standing around and you come up to one of the side doors, you ask me to let you in, I do. Now, if you happen to have a gun on you, I've just let you enter the building. If you are going to shoot someone, that's where you are going to start. By now it's too late. They are in the building and they are going to bypass the metal detectors. Somebody is going to get hurt or possibly die. No way to stop this from happening.

3. Yeah, it's going to cost a lot of money. Your talking about armed officers at all the doors of the schools, plus the cost of metal detectors. Would it be worth it? Yes, but problem is who is going to pay for all this. Nobody wants the bill on this one. Every town normally has at least 2 or more schools in their town. There are also a lot of doors to these schools.

4. Now, you are going to get people saying, Not my Town! It won't happen here so we aren't going to have all this cost for nothing. Then what happens?? It happens in their town! There is no way to predict this type of thing. I see it every day. People that have mental problems look like ordinary people. Sometimes you can tell but others, you always here he /she was such a quiet person.

True. If I had been investigating this incident as a campus police officer, I would have done things maybe a little different. See I have some power like if after talking to someone, I deem that they are a threat to themselves or someone else, I can take them to the hospital under the mental hygiene law. Problem is, that the hospitals let them go if they say the proper words to them. They actually believe the person!! :) So even if I brought them in to be mentally evaluated, if the person says: " No, I'm not thinking of hurting myself or anyone else," they let them go. Laws are getting more and more strict. They don't protect the victims they protect the defendants committing the crimes. I get frustrated in my type of work when I get told by the Defense Attorney / DA that I can't charge this person because of a stupid technicality. Please.

Something should have been done, but we really only know what the papers are telling us. The paper wants to sell papers, they don't care. Also, look at the time issue on this. The teacher said this occurred in 2005 with the essays. Even the way our system is, this might not have been prevented.

The girls roommate said they didn't even know he existed. She wasn't aware this guy had a crush on her.

I'm tired of people always saying: Well, it was the way I was brought up. Bullsh@t! What a lame excuse. We don't think of killing people just because we were abused or molested by our families. That is the biggest cop out I have ever heard. :)

I could go on and on.

I read that a lot of the people that got shot had more than one bullet in them. Do you realize how many rounds this guy had to have on him? How fast he was reloading to do this, because nobody tried to stop him? Thats what I'm talking about. It happens so quickly and people are shocked that they can't react quickly enough to stop it.

I'm experienced first hand having a loaded shotgun pointed at my face. A door was separating me from this individual who was using a couch as cover. I carry a gun, and most people say well I would have shot him. Right! You would have been dead! If a person points a gun at you, and yours is holstered. What do you think that person is going to do if I go for my gun? You got it, Shoot me! I got the hell away from the door and then went for my gun.

My point is that everything happens so fast that unless you are experienced and been trained to do this, people aren't going to react quickly. People have different reactions, they freeze , they panic, they run etc.

Well, I'm long winded and I'm out of time. So, feel free to respond.

somewhat off topic but..

Having worked at at the Public Defender's office, I could see where you're coming from on this Wolfey. However, I wouldn't change a thing with the system we have in place now. Our criminal justice system is premised upon the theory that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. The purpose of those technicalities is to ensure that every suspect, whether ultimately guilty or not, is afforded due process. Think what would have happened if we ignored those technicalities with the Duke lacrosse players and admitted the photo lineup consisting only of Duke lacrosse players... those innocent boys would still be suspected rapists. There's a saying among PDs that it's better to let 10 guilty people go free than to incarcerate 1 innocent person. While this seems like a drastic statement, I'm sure you'd want all the technicalities available if you were that innocent person.
I don't know about your state but where I live you have to get a permit for guns, and I do believe that they register you for the gun as well Impact. There is the permit and the registration :) But I see what you are saying, they aren't necessary in most places (though where I live, maybe they are. Some parts of Selma are not safe at all.)

I don't think that guns should be banned. Maybe make them harder to get, I don't know. I let other people deal with that.

As to video games being a problem: Maybe. Personally I find video games to be a HUGE vent for frustration and anger. I have been playing violent games for years and I don't want to kill anybody in real life.

And just like Psyclone said. Video games are harmful to the mind if that is ALL someone does. I went to a youth leadership thing and government guy came to talk about violence in video games. He said that if you play games and do NOTHING whatsoever socially then part of your brain will stop working as well. But, say, if you play games and hang out with your friends or talk to your parents or even talk to people on Ventrilo or Teamspeak, then they are not harmful. Reading, doing schoolwork, playing sports, things like that also help balance things out.

It was proven that the kids at Columbine did more or less nothing but play video games, and plus they were bullied I do believe (games were probably a reason for being bullied as well.)

Guns are not the problem. Video Games are not the problem. People who do not balance their mind are the problem.

There are state and federal laws on how hard it is to get a gun. What needs to be done is the strict enforcement of those LAWS first.

What I meant by my statement was, its frustrating when they won't even bring it to trial and let the jury decide. You're right I would want to be protected if I was innocent.
According to CNN, in 2005 a court found him mentally unstable and referred him to counseling. Why didn't the University know about this?? He also sent a package to NBC with photos, writings and other details. Apparently he sent it between the first and second shootings.

First off, this kid is a crap writer. If you're going to VT for English and you're going to write something this messed up, take the time to do it well.

Second, as disturbing as it may be now that he murdered 32 people, I've read much more disturbing things by people who didn't snap and shoot up their college.

It'd be nice if we could pay attention to every whining kid that can't get a date or that was stalking people. People even gave this kid attention and a chance to get some help and it wasn't enough. It's too bad he committed suicide. That kind of death is too good for him. Coward.

This shooting even had a effect way out in texas.

some guy tried to kill 2 people last year. he wanted to be a siller killer and made death threats. he even filed his nails to a point .the kid was asian and he was released on bond sunday. well anyways the day after the VT shooting the put him back in prison saying they gave him the wrong bail amount and that he had to pay more.

I loved how the media said that it was because he had a 9mm and could reload fast with it. Almost all shootings are done with a 9mm and they should be banned was their point. Thank God for the cop that kept repeatedly saying "Its not about the gun, its about the maniac using it"

 -Stupid F*cker...I am glad he is dead.

;) -I want to get those pics printed on TP and sell them, 100% of profits go to charity. lol

That is horrible writing anyways.

This morning on CNN they were talking about gun control and the guy who wanted to keep gun laws how they are cited an incident that happened in Virginia a while back. Apparently another guy at a school pulled a gun and was shooting people, but two guys ran to their cars and got THEIR guns and stopped the killer before he could do much damage. That is a reason for keeping the guns around. People as messed up as Cho (the VT killer) are going to get guns one way or another, legal or not.

and freefall, good idea, but I don't want that guy anywhere near my bum.

unless someone goes out to their cars like the other guys did...

i belive campus inculdes the entire place that the school rests on bulidings and all.
