Strange Computer Under Mineral Oil

Featured Replies

Works but not too well.. there is little or no flow, around the processor, meaning that there is a chance it would overheat...

i wonder what would happen to the fans.. the oil is considerably thicker than air, hence puts alot of stress on the fans.. they would burn out i am guessing.

:) -I do not know the specific heat of the oil used, but even at low flow I am guessing it can pull a fair amount of heat off.

:) -On your second point, I do agree somewhat. They are getting stressed electrically, but the electricity-torque part of the motor is magnetic and can not be stressed as it where.

That has been out for sometime now. Tomshardware did one a while back. You would have to change your oil every now and then. Otherwise it would become conductive I believe.

You would also need two computers. Incase you wanted to go to a lan party or something.

All in all though. I liked the bubbles at the end. That was kind of cool.

That was pretty cool but i would never try it. They might have something by submerging hardware in oil. :) Could be the new way to cool the comp. :)
There is a point were the entire tank of oil would become heated, with the lack of flow and a sort of radiator. Proper air cooling would yeild better/same results with less mess. Also, Phase cooling isn't to expensive and I would have to think that all the stuff they had to buy for this setup and the required mantainence wouldn't make it so affordable.

And as a result is more likely to burn out.. god lol the stresses you have to put the plastic under reach hundreds of pounds to actually break, i was talking about the electrical components overworking, overheating (possibly negated by the oil) and burning out.. it would also be drawing more power trying to turn it with that resistance.

haha you could always take the 200gallon tank of heating oil along with you XD
Interesting, very interesting....I would think they would want to circulate the oil to get a cooling cycle going...plus I think the point of it could become conductive (small particles breaking lose?) is a consideration, but some sort of filtering might take care of that problem... hmmm.. very interesting...
I bet it would be fun to add or take out a PCI card from that rig. I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would want to do this as their gaming rig.

My question exactly: why?

I WOULD PUT A FISH IN THERE TOOO!!!!
