August 31, 200718 yr I'm 90% sure that it wouldnt delete anything on your harddrive...it would just repair the OS.

August 31, 200718 yr yes if u have a recovery option in the startup just select the first option and don't do a destructive reinstallation. if you don't have that option or have already tried it just overlap ur os system files with just installing it. it will erase ur hdd if u select the wrong options so be careful

August 31, 200718 yr I once compacted my registry and had the same problem on startup, seems like it also erased an important OS file, I agree try to repair your OS using either a recovery disc or the windows XP disc. If that doesnt work or you cant find it then you can take it into just about any comp store and they will charge you maybe about 65 bucks i think give or take to reload windows if you can provide proof that you have purchased it in the past I.E. manual or case that it came in or the install code on the back of your laptop if it is a laptop!

And didnt want to wait weeks to get one in the mail! And I dont really know why anyone would but they do... a lot! I dont recall the file that was ruined but it was after i compacted ny registry then windows wouldnt even start up at first so I switched to safe mode and it started but nothing but desktop. So I repaired and it worked fine after that.
