Well today I get a call informing me that someone in Italy is making charges to my credit card. I've never lost my credit card so someone obviously got the number online somewhere. Anyone know how one can go about finding out where this information might have gotten loose?

 

The weird thing is the card that was used wasn't even the one I use on the internet, I use another card 95% of the time. The last internet purchase I made with this card was months ago. I am always very careful with who I give my card to online, only reputable retailers, and mine was still swiped, watch out.

 

Lesson learned, don't use your debit card online, you usually don't have any fraud protection and they can and will steal your number someday. Credit cards have much better fraud protection, I won't have to pay for any of the charges made fraudulently. Thank god it wasn't my debit card.

well it could be that u dont have any protection on ur computer, or the website u went to is not a good one to purchase from.

with debit cards it depends on ur bank cuz my will return the money if i didn't buy anything. and also i have a friend that works for my bank in the credit card sector so i can always call him.

maybe it was a credit card generator? either that or some company which you bought from or a third party credit card storage company had a breach of security.

when im shopping online, i usually use a one time use credit card number generated by the credit card company.

I don't think that they get your card online cause usually (not a rule)the sites that you can pay something online are very well guarded and is a big risk,they got your card when you were out at shopping.

 

How?

 

They got a fake machine looking exactly like the original one and pretending that the original one is not working or just doing when you doesn't pay attention they swipe the card in the fake one taking all information from there.

 

Few weeks later(at least),or months your case they are creating a fake card with your details on and using in another country or far from your town for shopping.

 

My advice:

 

-Online don't use it in any sites and you will be safe,

 

-When you are at shopping open youre eyes make sure you watch them all the time(shops with expensive things are most vulnerable).

 

This procedure is most frecvent in Europe...WELCOME!

 

And your bank suppose to pay for all so long that you can prove that you never do that shopping.

dude that sucks,my wife has had charges on her credit card in the past.It sucks but most credit cards have a pretty good guard against these fraud kinda things.She was able to just call the credit card comp. and straighten it out.Never had to pay a dime.Best of luck.

I buy a lot of stuff online since there isn't any good shopping around here without driving 150+ miles (lowest priced generic 350W power supply around here is $55). I haven't had any problems with my card number being stolen and I use my debit card quite often. Good thing is my bank hasn't updated my debit card information, so it's still using my old house address and zip code. So if anyone did get my debit card number they'd have to figure out which previous address it's still using. Works out to be a pretty good defense against fraud.

WPA as in your wireless network key? That wouldn't affect the security of your online transactions. Also, as I understand things, the server certificate dictates the encryption parameters used for SSL. So you wouldn't have control over what gets used unless you explicitly told your browser not to accept certificates under a certain security level.
