Strange Sickness in Peruvian Village

Featured Replies

Like something out of a sci-fi flick, a village in Peru has some of its residents falling ill after a meteorite crashed nearby. I thought it was a pretty cool story!

LIMA (AFP) - Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.

Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.

Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odor," local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP.

Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said.

Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater, said local official Marco Limache.

"Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned," he said.

It's the "blue ice" that airplanes drop from their toilets. Pretty stinky stuff I guess. ;)

Seriously though, very creepy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After hearing a loud noise, people went to see what had happened and found a crater 20-metres wide and seven-metres deep on an uninhabited plateau near Carancas, in the Puno region.

Experts from Peru's Geophysical Institute are on their way to the area 1,300 km south of Lima to verify whether it was a meteorite.

"We've examined about 100 people who got near to the meteorite crater who have vomiting and headaches because of gasses coming out of there," Jorge Lopez, health director in Puno, said.

"People are scared," he said.

This is what I'm most curious about. When was the last time you heard of a meteorite hitting somewhere and people get sick as a result? I've certainly never heard of it. I'm also rather curious about just what gases the meteorite is letting off and why water is boiling near the 'crash site'. It's not deep enough to hit underground water reservoirs, I don't think.

Anyway, just keep lookin' around the interwebs, guys and girls, and see what the news tells us about this. ^^

Upon further review an expert from Peru's Geophysical Institute urged residents to perform a "courtesy flush" after spending an extended time in the bathroom to avoid future occurrences of "gasses."
