Posted September 25, 200718 yr Yesterday the whole call to go to work while at work thing, along with the headset thing. I've been awake for 36 hours, and whilst I was unpacking the truck to put my stuff onto the boat very early this morning, I dropped my computer bag, it just fell out of the truck. So no big deal, I feel the edge of my bag, it has padding. Well I just went to turn it on, nothing. Well not exactly nothing, I can see the faintest whisper of the word "Windows". Well I figure the back light got broken since I can still see stuff on the screen. This is of course if there is no glare and I put my face really close to the screen, and then you can only see white things. These white things show up as lesser shade of black. I'm so bummed. It's been a while since I've had a bad few days like this. I didn't realize how lucky I was until I was no longer lucky. Strangely enough there was an article on how to change a laptop monitor in one of this month's computer magazines I subscribe to. Does anyone get computer magazines, could you tell me which magazine it is that the article is in? I also need the website address of the place where they ordered their replacement screen, I would like to have the screen waiting for me when I get home so I can just swap it out and forget these past few days ever happened. Thanks.

September 25, 200718 yr wow you are going to maybe have trouble finding a replacement screen for that..maybe a refurbished one. heres some info When your laptop screen works, but is so dim that you can only read it in a dark room after eating carrots all day, the problem is likely the backlight or the inverter. Replacing a Dell notebook backlight provides a somewhat standard illustration, and I show how to replace a Sony laptop inverter for variety. All the screen related laptop repairs are highly similar, in fact, the components are often made by a single manufacturer, with Sharp being a leading supplier. Of course, you can always go the homemade laptop route:-). I just posted the first draft of a series of laptop troubleshooting flowcharts, starting with laptop power problems, when the laptop just won't turn on. http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop_8.htm http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop/Sony_9.jpg http://www.daileyint.com/hmdpc/laptop/display.gif
September 25, 200718 yr Author I had the cover off earlier today, I saw the manufacturer. I can't recall who it was, but if I was to reopen the case and find out would that help? I found a replacement lcd screen new on some website for almost $400. I guess an inverter or back light would be cheaper.
September 25, 200718 yr I have a Toshiba P4 that I've had terrible luck with, I've had it compleatly disassembled 3 times because they didn't re-enforce the A/C bracket and the heat sinks clog up fast. Every now and then I have to open it up and re-solder the A/C bracket on the MB, the last time it came lose I put some epoxy around the bracket, it's been good for 8 months so hopefully it'll hold up. The next laptop I buy will be either a Sony or maybe a Tuffbook. The past two Toshiba's I've owned have had serious problems after a year and a half, I have never dropped one or anything, just bad a design. I hope you don't need a new LCD, $400 is a bit pricey.

September 25, 200718 yr OK If it was mine I would disassemble it and remove the CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) and replace it first. Those break easy and arnt expensive. It probably is a certain watt, size, volts. Im betting there is a generic replacement from sharp or somewhere. From what I have read on that site I gave the link to there is only 2 wires that you have to unsolder and re solder when you have the new one. http://lcdrepair.net/lcd-repair.htm go here watch this the bulb is 26.00 new ALOT less than 400.00 lol

Ok, I don't know how to solder. I'm on a hunk of metal in the GOM, no where near a store so, I will open the case again and check the bulb and see what gives. I found this http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-SAGER-NP4780S-17-0-1440X900-LAPTOP-LCD-SCREEN_W0QQitemZ110152920376QQihZ001QQcategoryZ31569QQcmdZViewItem, but it doesn't have an inverter. This one I found is cheaper, but I think I need to narrow down the exact problem before dropping some benjamins. Thank you Major. I will call upon your services again. You now have your own fan boy. bummer, sorry to hear about your laptop Thank you for your condolences, I'm even more sorryer. At least I have the new desktop at the house to play on now. But my old lappy keeps me company whilst I'm away, keeps me warm when I am cold. Cheers me up when I am sad, makes me laugh when I am angry. My old lappy makes me feel like am not where I am, and that's a good thing. I need to get this guy back to working order asap. I want to make sigs and chat vent, and xfire and do my 2142cc, I am lost without my old friend. Lappy is my portable home entertainment center, calculator, pay sheet maker, finance manager, avatar resizer, photo editor, my complete gateway to another world. Lappy you have done so much for me these past 3 years we've known each other, I miss ye sooo much. I haven't gotten to tell the wife, I wonder if she'll flip like I did. Probably not.
September 25, 200718 yr make sure you get a soldering iron that you can adjust the temp or get a low watt "electronics" soldering iron. The cheapo's are usually high watt.
