Luker3
First, I will say this is a long term project, but I am trying to get a good list of parts together. I, in a sence, am not restricted by money, but I acctaully don't have enought now, making this a long term project. Here are the parts: Chieftec Dragon Server Series (Black) - Full Tower - $65PowerMax 400w LP6100D - $28ASUS P4P800S - $81Pentium 4 2.8c - $189Kingston 2700 512mb (single stick) - $75Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm - $55Sony 16x Black - $30Sony MPF920 Floppy Black - $10ViewSonic Perfect Flat - Black - $205 These prices were all found on the internet, but I will be buying all of them at computer shows like MarketPro.com IF you have any suggestions please tell. Trust me I REALLY like that motherboard. I stumbled on to it on three occations. And no, I will not get an AMD. I like Intel and that is that. Potatoe_Cannon
I just built a computer for myself last summer, and I found all my parts off of www.pricewatch.com ..... very useful. I got the A7N8X and have been very happy with it, as with my Antec gunmetal-gray medium-sized tower (which ALSO came with power supply and a few fans). Except I went overkill on the RAM..... 2 sticks of 2700 512 MB with with a copper cover B) . And I'd go with an 80 GB hard drive just because I've filled up mine already with movies and such, but maybe you aren't as much as a criminal as I am :? . By the way, has anyone seen those ads at the movies encouraging people not to download movies by telling the story of a hardworking stuntman or stagehand? I just find that insulting that they think I'm dumb enough to believe that me downloading movies takes money out of their pockets. Try the actors who make an absolutely insane amount of money for a year's work or less. And even so, movie tickets are up to about $9.00 around here.... $9.00! It takes me an hour and a half to earn that much, I'd like it to talk longer than an hour and a half to spend it! Except for Miracle, that was worth every penny. Teladro
Ok, two simple things:First, if you're going to limit yourself to 512MB RAM, go with 2 sticks. 2 sticks of memory access faster than just one stick.Second, 40GB goes fast with today's programs, as well as other...downloadable stuff. I really wouldn't shoot lower than 80, as the price jump isn't that much higher.Teladro
Luker3
Well, the RAM I wasn't sure what to do with that, but I think the mortherboard I want nly hase three slots or somthing, but I probably would only ever need 768mb. The hard drive I might go up to sixity. My old computer came with an 80gb hard drive, oh wait I mean 70gb (idiots), I have only use half. I am going to network them so that is why I thought I would just keep the big files that aren't game, like movies, on the old comp, and just play them over the network or somthing. Yeah, I have a 40GB HD, and I havent even used a quarter. We are sitting at 30GB used with 5 people. You do not need anything over 40, good choice. Macgyver
40gb is fine. buy more when you need more. Same with ram however it is better to get two stcks as mentioned above especially at the same time. Get two 256mb. Get the best quality and best timings you can afford. Like this stuff....... http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-144-405&catalog=147&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0 By the way. It is not cas 2.5. I have it and it is cas 2. Great stuff cheap. PS get this one. It is better and quieter than the Powmax. Real heavy too. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-154-013&catalog=58&depa=0 Get like this case and spend the money saved on better ram. And you have a spare PS to boot. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-138-033&catalog=7&depa=0 This case has a built in handle. COOL. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-145-012&catalog=7&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0 Do you really need a full tower Server series case? Luker3
A few questions about the items you listed Mac. The memory, that should work fine on the motherboard? I was always kinda of worried about overclocked memory. The Allied 400w power supply says it is AMD approved, but does that make a big difference since I am getting an Intel? Should, or does it matter if it is Intel approved? Ya the case was just for convience. I look at another case before, http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-144-026&catalog=7&depa=1§ion=3 , I could get it at a computer show for $55. IF they all check out, it looks great! thank you!
Macgyver
The memory will run in Dual channel mode so it will be faster by default over just one stick. Not by a whole lot but none the less faster..It is not overclocked memory. It is capable of running a lot faster FSB or memory speed. It has really good timings so you can run the memory faster at default speeds that you will run at.The power supply is just good for the money whether AMD or Intel. Vey quiet as well. Two fans:) :)That case. I have it. Do not get it. Seriously.! Dont.! The other two I have as well and they are way better. Especially the Powmax with top handle. Luker3
AND... How about this RAM, http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-406&catalog=147&depa=0 and this power supply, http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-163-013&catalog=58&depa=0 P.S. I am also buying a good amount of this stuff ot computer shows, sot that there is no shipping and handling... and I can bargan!!! When I get there I wall have what to caompare to and look for. Like I have seen a few of that case at the shows. So I can inspect it to see everything myself.
Macgyver
i used to do the shows too but Newegg rocks.Powmax PS's are not too good.Get the allied. It is only $6 dollars more. Why get slower ram for 8 dollars less per stick???????Geil is REALLY good stuff.$50 for 256mb of PC3500 cas 2,3,3,6. Come on it does not get much better than that.I really know what I am talking about here.I have built probably 50 computers last year a lone.I have 11 here in my house fully functional. I deal with Newegg b/c they have the best prices versus return policies versus shipping that is so fast.I do not build them to make money. It is for fun and knowledge. What I know is what I already stated above.Find better deals at a show.?I dont think so. Been there done that.Dont forget to add the sales tax and or fee to get in onto the price of the stuff. Then try to return the stuff if it is bad. Been there done that. Not fun.
