As I have no plans to go to Vista, I can only hope BF 3 will run on XP (and that BF3 won't be as frustrating for me to play as BF2 has been).

Thanks I must confess though I'm originally from Oklahoma, but I've lived in Kansas for over 5 years (It'll be 6 come January). One thing I've found is that the more I play COD4, the more I despise the killcam. It's to the point I'm only playing on servers where the killcam is off. I wonder why the devs put it in there in the first place (or has it been there since the first COD? COD4 is the only game from the series I've actually played). For some reason, the game is more frustrating with the killcam on than with it off; probably because I somehow think the game itself is rubbing in the fact I suck. That being said, on the Armory servers (and only on the Armory servers) I can live with the killcam if enough folks like it. The only modes I've played in COD4 are Team Deathmatch and Domination, and I don't know much about the other modes, though I imagine I probably won't like the no-respawn modes at all (I do like to get right back into the mix), and free-for-all sounds like it'd frustrate me to no end. HQ does sound interesting though. Overgrown, Backlot, Bloc, District, and Crash are currently my favorite maps, and I don't care for Shipment (it's okay if there are less than 10 people playing; any more than that it's too small) and Ambush. Well, I'm new here but I'd like to make a couple of suggestions for the non-hardcore server. I haven't tried hardcore yet though with my lack of playing skills it sounds like it'd be a frustrating mode for me to play. Killcam Off. I found the thing I most hate about COD4 is the killcam. I already know how terrible I am, I don't need a killcam to prove the point :klinked: Could Domination please be considered on the non-hardcore server? I'd like to see rotation between Dom, HQ, TDM, and maybe S&D. Of the maps I've played on, the only two so far I wouldn't want are Shipment and Ambush, though I don't think I've played all the maps yet. Take Care

Many thanks for the help. I did uninstall/reinstall in this order (game, patch 1.4, NS, patch 1.4 again) and it still is not working for me. I'm still getting the "update available" message when I start the game, and it won't let me join any servers except the EA betas (it's telling me I have an older version than the server). I even made the registry change and re-applied the patch...no effect (it changed the version back to 1.28s in the registry editor). EDIT: I ended up re-downloading the patch from a different source (I think I used EA's ftp site), reinstalled everything (base game, 1.4 patch, NS, 1.4 patch) and now it works. Still think it's a silly way to have to patch a game, but I at last got it to work. Take Care

Well I installed the 1.40 patch (actually reinstalled then patched) and the only servers I can play on are EA's beta servers. It's still saying I have an older version, and I can't get any other servers to come up. Most annoying... Any help would be appreciated as I've flat run out of ideas as to how to fix it.

The single-player was probably the best single-player I have played. Very good storyline and some sweet missions (my favorites are the sniper mission and the AC-130 mission). My only wish on the single-player is that I wish it was a bit longer Multiplayer is okay, but there are some things I don't particularly like. Maps are a bit small (guess I've gotten used to the wide-open maps of 2142), it's hard to find a particular server, and it can be a bit frustrating (though that's probably because I'm probably the world's worst FPS player ). No squad system, no buddy list. On the flip side the class creation system is pretty cool Take Care
