i only use 5.1 sound, Creative Inspire 5200. It's great to feel your game rather than just watch it.....

as long as you have an open PCI slot your fine. Onboard sound is usually less of a drain on resources then a pci slot but i have both. Audigy 2 Platinum and the Dolby Soundstorm. I would say get an audigy 2 card, the older models are a lot cheaper now i got mine when it came out two years ago for $200, now only $80. Its not hard at all to install a card just pop it in to the slot, connect your cd/dvd drive and enjoy
