Valve rips off Brits

Call of Duty pricing mis-match

By Wily Ferret: Wednesday, 07 November 2007, 12:13 PM

EUROPEANS ARE VENTING steam from their ears over Valve's latest pricing ruse for its online service called, appropriately enough, Steam.

Universal pricing on the service has been great for anybody not living in a county ruled by the not-so-almighty dollar. However, the imminent release of Call of Duty 4 next week has angered denizens of the interweb, if not the US, by whacking on a mighty non-US price hike.

For those living in the US, CoD4 costs just $49.95 to pre-order. For those living in Europe, the cost is $69.95.

Why the discrepancy? There appears to be no apparent reasoning, beyond 'bad luck, sucks to be you'.

Brits have long been used to paying over the top for software products on CDs - but with the physical medium removed and delivering taking place on the World Wide Web, price gouging is a little tougher to take.

No doubt there will be some official explanation full of gumph about living costs, development offices, currency standards and the like. But the bottom line is this - we are living in a global economy, and media providers better get used to the fact that territorial pricing and release divides just won't cut it. ?

Same with the Australians. I was just talking with some of my australian friends and they were raging into the mic about how they had to pay extra for this stupid game. Then they start screaming about how Americans are all greedy fat pigs and all they wanna do is be like EA, pretend like they own the world.

...nice friends I have. :D

Those goofy guys, I actually smiled reading this.

I'm sorry but that really irks me when ppl in other countries blame "all Americans" for something the citizens don't have any control over. I read blogs all the time about various subjects and the ppl from other countries blame all Americans for the worlds problems.

That is wrong, if you download a game it should be cheaper vs retail, not the same price. I think $49.99 is too much, I'm a greedy American though.

O.o they weren't actually serious. They make fun of the "stereotypical American" not Americans actually...
Ahhh gotcha, brits and aussies are usually cool to americans, it's more the european countries and the middle east, I hear ppl talkin crap about us in blogs all the time. Ignorance.

Funny. They say the same thing about us.

I don't feel the need to bash a citizen of another country for something they have no control over, I don't understand why someone who I have never spoken to can attack me just because I'm an American. I'm just sick of those who blame Americans for issues the citizens have no control over.

Sorry I'm just sick of all this hating and lack of value for life.

So, why do u guys think the reason the price is $20 dollars higher in other countries? I wonder what Steam will say.

Lesson #1

Don't buy anything online, where the end result leaves you with just an install on your hard drive.

Lesson #2

Always buy things that you can physically own, such as a CD/DVD in a case that you can throw at sombody if they piss you off.

Lesson #3

Move to USA, be hated, and pay less for games.

Agree it could be more to cover those costs, but $20 per game is crazy. They would have to be sending boxes over in first class seats. Plus $20 more when even downloading it?

lol Mr D long time:klinked:

i agree with the #2 and 3

but i have no problems with on games with out disks most my ea stuff is like that now and many things thur steam.it's kinda better no fussing with cds and if i need to reinstall it's all in the downloading tool :D

They stamp the CDs in china/far east... hence it is cheaper to get "here" soto speak..
I have nothing productive or particularly interesting to say on this subject. Just thought you should know.

Europeans have terrible service in their restaurants.

There, I have said it. Flame away Yankee haterzzz :D

Downloading games saves the company money so it should be cheaper for the consumer as well. Now that EA is charging me $5 so I can download 2142 in the future it's more expensive then buying retail, that doesn't make any sense. EA should allow you to burn your game setup files to DVD like Steam does, they've forced everyone to pay the $5 because theres no other option.

COD4 is probably more expensive because the dollar is so weak right now.

Well all I got to say about the bashing of Americans is........When the crap hits the fan in whatever country it maybe be who do they always look to for help? Hmmmmmmmm would it be the good ole USA? Yep!!! We are called many things and frowned upon by alot of countries, right up til the time they need aid, rather it be finacial, food, or the presence of our military. Sorry about your luck with the prices..considered it interest on what you owe us or will owe us down the road.
