Breaking: Battlefield 3 Leaked Info

October 9, 2007

A tipster sent us PDF document which looked like an outline of features for Battlefield 3. The three page document is apparently prepared for investors which should get it by December of this year. It details basic features of BF3, and are as listed:

Release in late 2008

Powered by ?Frostbite DX?

Set in year modern day (just like BF2, ed.)

Will ship with 8 maps, each supporting up to 40-players per team

Two playable factions, NATO and MEC (Middle Eastern Coalition)

Same ?ticket-based? gameplay style as before

Maps are mostly urban, based in Middle East

Squads and Commanders are present, introduced are ?Battalions? which consist of three to four squads.

Five playable classes; Sniper, Assault, Engineer, Medic and Support

Will feature 48 different vehicles (24 for each faction)

Will feature 34 different weapons (17 for each faction) and another 22 unlocks (for both factions), in total 56 different weapons.

Other unlocks include different types of ammunition, body armor, helmets, camouflage and accessories.

Possible public beta in ?Summer 2008″

Online stats tracking, awards and ?real world ranks?

?Soldier? feature, looks like MMO-styled characters and avatars

Ranked servers will be available for resellers weeks before the game ships (for testing, apparently, ed.)

In-game replay and recording feature

VoIP, friends list, in-game IM-client and ?extensive clan support?

Built-in auto software updater (no more patches!, ed.)

Widows Vista and OS X (no XP?!, ed.)

Announcement and teaser trailer in January 2008.

A map is mentioned by name, called ?Baghdad Burning?, and appears to be a massive urban map, similar to BF2?s very popular ?Strike at Karkand?. The game is powered by ?Frotbite DX?, currently the Frostbite engine is used in Battlefiled: Bad Company on PS3 and Xbox 360. The ?DX? could refer to DirectX (10?), a PC version of the Frostbite engine.

Please note that none of this is confirmed, we?ve emailed a few people from EA and DICE (Battlefield developers) and will update the article as soon as we know more. Also note that we cannot, for obvious (legal) reasons, release the PDF document. Stay tuned for more info.

[update 1] A few wanted to know if the document mentions in-game advertising, it does not, but wouldn?t be surprising, considering BF2142 had in-game advertising.

[update 2] EA responded to the rumor with a ?no comment? statement. Still waiting for a reply from DICE (which will probably be the same).

[update 3] For clarification, the document doesn?t say that XP is not supported, it only lists Vista and OS X.

[update 4] Further investigation reveals that EA DICE owns the domain ?battlefield3.com? (not so important, since it was registered in 2004, so was battlefield4.com etc.). Still no reply from DICE. Stay tuned for further updates.

They didn't mention if there would be any bugs in this game LOL.

Of course there are. There's no chance of anything being bug-free

This is the part that bothers me. All the BF games have always had so few maps, and no chance of adding 3rd party maps into ranked games, that they become stale very quickly. For some reason they think releasing a game with 8 maps, then charging $15-25 for 3-4 new maps that only a smaller fraction of people will get, meaning they won't be useful unless you run multiple servers, is a good idea.

But like all new games, I'll hold off pre-judging as much as possible until I see a demo ;)

This was posted awhile back, they need to release something concrete though. 2142 is on it's last breath of air.

I am excited to see a trailer as well. If it has the graphics like COD4 and the team work like previous Battlefield games, i am sure it will be a success.

Well you know the thinking

1942

then BF 2 was way better then all the fixes then all the maps we had to buy and then 2142 and all the bug fixes then the add on maps we got with it

IM thinking alright they have had all this time to improve the game play and many many many bug fixes lol ;)

Sooo OK BF 3 should be wayyyy better I hope lol

but yea its gonna need some bug spray fo sure........ :)

Im glad it got reposted I missed the first one :(

No doubt. Also, two weeks after release whatever weapon you enjoy using the most will be nerfed to the point it would be better to throw it than fire it at your enemy. Then two weeks after that a patch will cause your computer to crash.

they better fix the knife "shank" "shank" "shank" "shank" "shank" "shank" "shank" "shank" work gosh dangit
My friend who knows EA's presidents daughter (and went out with her) got the chance to play bf3 in 2006. He said it was awesome but I'm sure since then the game has changed a lot. ;)

"Squads and Commanders are present, introduced are “Battalions” which consist of three to four squads."

What kind of crap is that. There was a hard enough time getting three squads that were wourth damn, let alone four.....

Not to mention if ya can't walk over a freakin rail road in this game, then you know they didn't put a whole lot of thought or effort into it.

I don't trust the built-in autoupdater idea either. You better be able to update the game when ever "YOU" want. Otherwise those that are in leagues are gonna have a hell of time. Now this going from my luck with their most recent POS patch "1.40", if it updates automatically and the game doesn't work what the hell are you going to do. I know, I know, they will say they will have everything ready to go upon launch. Well they are still trying to get everything going for 2142 and it launched when?

2142 wasn't a horrible game, but it had bugs that killed it for me. Mostly doing the most recent patch and not being able to play. Not counting that though, it had more then its fair share of bugs.

I hate to judge anything before I actually try, but this just sounds like another EA money getter. It will take a hell of a lot for me to try a new BF series before I buy it.

To EA's defense railroads are awful difficult to walk over. And I'm pretty sure a roadsign can stop an 80-ton tank dead in its tracks.
  • 4 weeks later...

from the sounds of it this game is going to be sweet.

as much as we hate EA's lack of customer support, they do hold the best mmo experiences.

2142 was alot of fun and it did last us a while of playing. Sharp is just bitter about 2142 from getting pwned all the time...haha :p :)

Definately looking foward to it..

EA SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY need to look at the initial release and this time NOT listen to the whiners who whine about weapons they cant play with (but arent necessarily overpowered).... they also need to sort out the netcode or 80players = LAG!!!

EA doesn't need to look at anything....Anything they look at becomes broken.

As far as i'm concerned....They can just keep themselves busy by doing each other because that is all they are good at......

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

it is a little inappropriate, but hey, "THEY" broke a game that cost me $50 upon release. No, it is nothing "I" did. I just installed "THEIR" pos patch. freakin bastards.........

What really impresses me is how everyone is so excited for "bf3". When they have already had so many chances, and still haven't produced anything solid.....BF3 better be a freakin miracle in box, otherwise there is no way I will even think twice about it.

Yeah, COD 4 has left me craving the large scale fights of BF2 again. As much a buggy POS as BF3 might initially be, I am totally looking forward to it. Also, on a lot of servers I played on, there were frequently 4+ squads, so the battalion idea sounds pretty sweet to me.
What the F? Are they releasing it early in the UK so people won't complain about the price disparity between Europe and the US? Hmmm.
well if they use the same type of updater that world of warcraft uses then it should work and not only update the game but also update it self. they also seem to be allowing the ranked server to be tested before release to ensure better gameplay.

You cant compare WOW with BF3 or any other series of bf. Consistently once patch to the next, people have had problems loading the game, joining servers, CTDs, sound, picture, and please add in any problems that are not covered by those.

Not to mention WOW wasn't made by EA. This is like apples and beer.

phrogg wat i was saying is that if ea used a program that actually worked for once might help. even tho i have very little hope of that happening
