Posted May 13, 200817 yr One of my friends girlfriends was diagnosed with Leukemia and is in the icu. If your not in the bone marrow donor registry you should sign up. Its free from may 5th to the 19th and they will even mail it to you. http://www.marrow.org/ http://www.dodmarrow.org/ for military peeps I just gave blood and signed up today. All they do is take 4 check swabs (like on csi). Its really easy to do and free. Thanks KFA
May 13, 200817 yr Already signed up as a DOD marrow donor. Couldn't give blood though, iron levels are too low : (
May 14, 200817 yr i wish i could give blood or anything but they wont take it. Ah why? I mean..I know some of the questions they ask... My wife used to work for red cross..... I am reading up on it and will most likely join.
May 14, 200817 yr definitely hope people will sign up, i signed up back in college and did secondary screening twice for possible matches. they take a lot more blood the second time, but it's definitely worth it if you're a good match for someone. wish her the best kfa.
May 14, 200817 yr Author From what I understand there are 6 different protenins that make you different. They keep track of the first 4 becuase they are cheaper to test for. The other two are checked if you match someone that needs it for the first 4. Or so I understand it. Thanks to the people that signed up To the others come on and do it its a really good cause.

May 15, 200817 yr Author You can sign up to donate marrow regardless of where you have traveled or any tattoos or piercings. heres the guidelines http://www.marrow.org/HELP/Join_the_Donor_Registry/Med_Guidelines_Join/index.html
October 9, 200817 yr Author Well I just got a call today saying that I might be a match for somebody. Kind of weird. Kind of nervous and happy. The nervous might just be from my two exams tommorow possibly followed by a case of depression so well see.
October 9, 200817 yr I've heard it's super painful to donate they have to cut your bone open to remove it.
October 10, 200817 yr I've heard it's super painful to donate they have to cut your bone open to remove it. ya,giving blood is easy and only takes 10 or so mins, giving bone marrow is painful and takes a lot longer.I would do it for a family member but not just put my self on a list for just anyone.I suppose that sounds selffish but i bet most people feel this way. My wife on the otherhand gives blood every 6 weeks for free.her whole family is into it her dad has just surpassed some 20 or more gallons now.and they all check that little donor spot their drivers license. So there are many selfless people out there too.Hats off to them. I hope things turn around for your friend kfa,a co-worker of mine just found him self in the same boat. He's got Leukemia in about %60 of his body and he was looking bad.But now he's walking around ok and although he can't return to work for some time,he's doing much better. So keep up the hope.
October 12, 200817 yr Author Both of my parents and one of my aunts has had cancer and all won. Me signing up had nothing to do with that but I know what having someone having cancer goes through. For a number of diseases the last option is a bone marrow transplant. In my family it was all caught early with easy treatments so it wasnt too bad. I can only imagine how hard it must be for someone and their family to have gone through all that and having a bone marrow transplant be there last option. Im sure theyve gone through 1000x worse than what I would have to go through and I have a chance to end that for them. Plus on the other hand if I had leukemia I would want someone else to do it for me how could I not do it for them now that I might be a match. Thatd be pretty damn hypocritical of me. So I still recomend anyone to sign up. You dont have to commit to donating. The odds are insanely small of even be contacted for additional testing (what im doing now) their like 3 in 700. The lady that im in contact with has been on the list for 7 years without being called. Plus they are doing more donations now that you just take a drug and it makes you make more marrow and they take it out of your blood so its not painfull.
October 12, 200817 yr Sorry to hear about that. I can't donate blood because of low iron. Wish I could though. Hope all goes well for your friend. She's in my prayers.
October 13, 200817 yr good luck and I hope she does well. sorry to hear the news... one thing about the Armory... people care!...
October 14, 200817 yr Here's the best support you can get, http://www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp These are the support groups you could find what you are looking for.
October 14, 200817 yr Author Ok Got more blood drawn today filled like 10 vials of blood. Still a lot less than a normal donation but the nurse said it was the most shes had to fill in a while. Shes been on the list for 17 years and never called her so she was impressed when i was only on it for 5 months. Than I got to fill out half a dozen concent forms and medical history stuff. Not really sure if Ive been in contact with someone who was recentlly vaccinated for smallpox. Doesnt seem like a good first date question. So I guess Ill find out in the next 4 weeks if Im a good match or not.
