Posted June 24, 200817 yr NASA scientist said the situation has gotten so bad that the world's only hope is drastic action. James Hansen told Congress on Monday that the world has long passed the "dangerous level" for greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and needs to get back to 1988 levels. He said Earth's atmosphere can only stay this loaded with man-made carbon dioxide for a couple more decades without changes such as mass extinction, ecosystem collapse and dramatic sea level rises. "We're toast if we don't get on a very different path," Hansen, director of the Goddard Institute of Space Sciences who is sometimes called the godfather of global warming science, told The Associated Press. "This is the last chance." "We see a tipping point occurring right before our eyes," Hansen told the AP before the luncheon. "The Arctic is the first tipping point and it's occurring exactly the way we said it would." Hansen, echoing work by other scientists, said that in five to 10 years, the Arctic will be free of sea ice in the summer. Im curious to know who thinks global warming is real?
June 24, 200817 yr Its first time that i heard somewhere in this world it might be someone having doubts about, whoa!!!
June 24, 200817 yr The thing is ,it's a fact. How can we even try to debate this issue. All one needs to do is merely open their eyes to see it.The only thing left debatable is why exactly.More or less it's from people and our fuel sources. They(the experts) have told us for some time now what will happen if we don't make changes, and right before our own eyes it's happening just like they say. Now we the people of this planet can talk about it for the next decade or so and watch as our lives and everyother life on this earth suffer from it,or start doing something. Of course we all know what's gonna happen, were gonna debate it 'till the nay sayers have no points left to make, and the only thing left is the truth but of course by that time it'll be toooooo late and that will be the biggest shame of all. We have the means to change the world or to ruin it.For my childrens sake i sure hope our leaders can sort this out and help us make the right decisions. But they won't and we all know it.
June 24, 200817 yr "Im curious to know who thinks global warming is real?" I am sure it is real but I don't believe their assessment of the danger. I remember the scientists saying that oil would be gone by 1990 unless we changed right then to alternative energy. These same people said the earth would starve by 2000 if we did plant the whole earth in corn. We have problems in all three however not on the magnitude that the scientists would have us believe. We are overdue for an ice age. Also it would just take one huge volcano erupting ash into the atmosphere and things would get cooler quick. Science is an inexact thing when all the facts are not known, like predicting the weather.
June 24, 200817 yr well one things for sure the amount of weather related issues have been piling up everywhere on the planet.people more and more are being displaced.Food supply and fresh drinkable water is dwindling.Coastlines are being pushed back, causeing people to lose their homes.Just here in my state WI and the state next to us Iowa are flooding badly the rain won't stop it seems like.Look at china right now could any more freakish things go wrong. I guess whether it's the weather or not or just a natural thing that this planet goes through,we the people are looking pretty screwed in the near future.
June 24, 200817 yr I think that if you believe that something greater then you is in charge of everything, you don't worry half as much.
June 24, 200817 yr It is as real as you can observe how the summers are getting hotter and shorter, and the winters colder and longer and in some areas even snowless !!!!
June 24, 200817 yr It is as real as you can observe how the summers are getting hotter and shorter, and the winters colder and longer and in some areas even snowless !!!! Do you have winter correct? Didn't you mean shorter and warmer?
June 25, 200817 yr I always vote that there is no global warming, but that isn't exactly what I think. I don't think there is global warming in the same sense most people do. While, it is true the the Earth is getting warmer, it is also a natural thing. We will be fine. The Earth will be fine. The question is what will happen? Well, for example, anyone can recall weather forecasters getting the weather report wrong. They barely predict an entire week, why do we think "scientists" can predict even the next 5 years? Truly, they can't, they are guessing. If they are right then big brownie points, if not well, then guess we don't have to worry about that one. Besides, most of the major consequences we predicts have the phrase "over the next 100 years". Over the next 100 years? Do you think that Teddy Roosevelt should have predicted and stopped the problems we have today? What makes what we know so much better in predicting the next 100 years? Also, to think we can "prevent" it, especially now, is stupid. It is like "environmentalists" trying to save an endangered species or stopping forest fires. If you were a true environmentalist then you would understand that it is better to let nature be than manipulate it to stay exactly how it is.
June 25, 200817 yr well i don't see it as a waste of time to think of better, and less dangerous way's to do things like for fuel/power.And conserving things a little better and avoid wasting things. They might not save the world but it could improve it a little.

I agree, we don't need to waste anything.
June 27, 200817 yr Author IM surprised at this look what I read today! It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year. Exclusive: No ice at the North Pole Polar scientists reveal dramatic new evidence of climate change http://www.independent.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00035/polar_35097a.jpg Scientists predict that at least 70 per cent of this single-year ice – and perhaps all of it – will melt completely this summer, Dr Serreze said.
June 27, 200817 yr predicting the weather and actually giving facts on the world are two different things...There are facts to back up the whole global warming thing. Like KT said, if you can't see it then you need to open your eyes. People that don't believe it is happening think way to highly of the government and trust in what they say. Like global warming...."what is that".... Speaking of the floods here in Iowa, KT, I wouldn't put it past the total damage being over a billion dollars. I know two towns were almost completely wiped out by it, and one of our biggest cities got hit pretty hard as well...To put it into perspective, this is like a katrina in Iowa... I will try and get some pictures up so you all know what has been going on.

If you take a look at the course of history over the last 500,000 years or so you will see quite clearly that the world has been fluctuating as much as 15 degrees +/- for years.. we are coming out of an ice age at the moment, yes it may be made quicker by humans, but it is not caused by them. "Global warming" is a nice buzzword at the moment, scientists who say "yes it is happening" are getting huge government grants to continue their research so its a popular thing to be saying right now.. even if it isnt actually happening, this added to the massive media hype (read twisting the truth to get a better headline) have blown it all out of proportion Fact for you: the term "global warming" was invented when Margret Thatcher was in power, so she and her government had a "solid" excuse to shut the government funded coal mines down.

June 27, 200817 yr Ok just my thought on this issue: 1. Do we need to change the way we use the Earths resources YES. 2. Fact the Earth has been Heating and Cooling for millions of years, naturally, with or with out your help.
June 28, 200817 yr Greenhouse gas production is through the roof, is caused by man and is not part of the natural rhythm. Greenhouse gases are the cause of global warming. I live in Colorado and see firsthand climate changing. I remember it used to rain here every day in the summer, now we go weeks before a good rain. I remember it used to snow like crazy on the hills here so we could go sledding, now it barely snows. This year, not enough snow to go sledding on the same hills I used to as a kid. Further, I seen pictures my dad took here in Colorado and see the streets covered in snow, it hasn't been that way since the late 80's early 90's.
June 28, 200817 yr It's not that i don't believe global warming is happening (it obviously is) i just believe that all the warming is not being caused by us. Researchers have said that this is normal in the earth's climatology every so often. After the warm up then the cool down (ice age). Are we helping matters not really but it isn't all our fault.
June 28, 200817 yr Lets speak facts here.... Forests are vanishing, logging is at an all time high, forests are needed to convert greenhouse gases into oxygen----- not part of natural cycles Automobiles, factories, power plants produce massive quantities of greenhouse gases that have no where to go but saturate the atmosphere, just think how much each person contributes to greenhouse gases. For instance, leave your car running in your garage for a few minutes, it becomes quickly saturated. ------- not part of natural cycles Ice in the polar regions are melting ------ whether or not this is part of a natural cycle is yet to be seen, however it is alarming. One thing is certain, without white ice reflecting sunlight back into space, the oceans will absorb the extra light rays and warm up. Weather, storms, etc.... which are fueled by heat energy seem to be more intense these past 10 years. If you don't understand how weather works, read a science textbook. Rising warm air can create tornadoes.... heat is directly related to the amount of moisture in the atmosphere over bodies of water which causes precipitation, and so on and so forth... How can anyone argue with me on any of these points stated above? The facts are there for everyone to see. The physics of these processes aren't changing.....

Well typed! If the weathers continue like this, few many years and we will have a Summer in Winter and rivers more fat than that we know! Egidio.
