Posted December 18, 200816 yr Hey guys just informing yall, there is a scam going around on steam right now. I got a message from hooligan telling me about a site, steamstatistics.tk or something like that where you could check your stats. I know something like it exists, and it of course looked like the one I had seen. It was a phishing scam. My password is stolen now, I submitted the problem to valve, hopefully I will get my crap back. But yeah, just be aware. BTW: I HAVE REGAINED CONTROL OF MY ACCOUNT!
December 18, 200816 yr Ouch, hope they get your account back. There's hundreds of these scams, I rarely talk to people on using steam friends so I've never had someone try to take mine. But people post all of the time about these on the steam forums.
December 18, 200816 yr Nope. If your stuff gets hacked and banned you need to buy EVERYTHING all over again. It happened to my friend recently. Valve doesn't do anything about it.
December 18, 200816 yr i have had my account stolen without giving a password out, and i have had to retrieve my account multiple times, even though i haven't given out my password nor my user name. i had to just send them proof that i own hl2 on the account with pictures of the cd key and they just reset my password for me and give me the password. you will get it back one time my account was stollen and then it got banned, but i still got it back hahah
December 18, 200816 yr what! hooligan sent me this to, and i logined to that site. should I go reset my password?
December 18, 200816 yr the website that hooligan sent me is this: *removed link* is this a legit website? or a scam website?
December 18, 200816 yr Author the website that hooligan sent me is this: *removed link* is this a legit website? or a scam website? if you went there and logged in change your pass NOW
December 18, 200816 yr Author Hooligan? He is good people though I thought. I wonder what is going on?! he got hacked too apparently
December 18, 200816 yr Yeah, got a message from his account too. I knew what it was as soon as I saw the message. My roommate got his account hacked from a phishing scam a month ago. Valve had his back to him in 3 days.
December 18, 200816 yr Wow, moral of the story is to never give up user/pw to anyone over an IM; this case is essentially the same thing given that he told you where to drop your info. Best of luck with Valve, I hope you can get your account back.
December 18, 200816 yr alright, i changed my password right after i read this forum. Is there anything else i can do?
December 18, 200816 yr Author no you'll be fine if you changed your pass, as long as you dont give them the new password they can't get you.
December 18, 200816 yr Here is clients.txt taken from the Armory source server. So we can all vouch for both SneakyArab and Hooligan using our steam id's. Any bit of evidence showing the steam id's are theirs may help. clients.txtclients.txt
December 18, 200816 yr Author I just called a buddy of mine in town to warn him, here's how the convo went: Me: "Hey man, do you still use Steam?" Him: "Umm... my steam account got hijacked." Me: "So did I. Who sent it to you? How did it happen?" Him: "I don't know. How did yours get stolen?" Me: "I got phished. It was ( website x ). I got it from a friend who got hijacked." Him: "Ooook yeah, that was it. I think you sent it to me. You know what else, my email got stolen too." Me: "Mine too!" Him: "Yeah I used the same password for those, its like the only 2 things with the same password." Me: "... mine too. Hey do you have the info for that email address? Like name and stuff?" Him: "No, it was a junk email. I put in crap info." Me: "Me too..." Him: "Yeah..." Me: "Dang it, I was trying to warn you before it happened." Him: "Yeah well I put in a report to Valve." Me: "Me too, I gave them my credit card stuff for validation." Him: "Me too." Me: "Hopefully we'll get em back. Sorry man." Him: "Yeah, me too. I'll talk to you later." Me: "K, bye." We are like twins!
December 22, 200816 yr Author Ok, sry for the absence, I was in NC with my girl. I am back now, and my account is MINE AGAIN! I had my brother checking my email and yesterday they sent me a password reset. Yay!
December 24, 200816 yr Hey guys just informing yall, there is a scam going around on steam right now. BTW: Don't trust anything that I say from my steam account unless I post here that I have regained control. Then how do we know this is real??? dun dun ddddduuuuuunnnnnn.......just figured i would add some comic relief
December 25, 200816 yr I haven't posted in ages... I'm not trying to sound cute but the best anti-phishing software is commonsense and a good deal of skepticism. Never under any circumstance should you enter your user-name/password into any website that you personally haven't validated. The easiest way to do that is to start at the beginning of the URL and see if it matches the company website or whatever you are trying to register with. In this case steamcommunity or steampowered. Also, and I'm guilty of it too in some degree, using duplicate passwords is asking for trouble. Just be sure to try and avoid using the same passwords to related accounts. For example, your email password and steam password. I hope you guys are able to recover your accounts, especially if you have a digital copy.
December 26, 200816 yr I don't think this was a website where you enter in personal information. Instead it used an IE exploit which was just patched last week.
