Without getting into politics I would just like to say political leaders on BOTH sides should stand against this on or near ground zero.

This is being used as a political football, and I personally don't care one way or the other. With that said, I will say this... We are a country of many freedoms. Over the years since our very existence as a country, our brave soldiers have fought and died for the many freedoms we enjoy today. One of those freedoms is the right to practice any religion we so chose, and in fact, it so states in the U.S. Constitution. So you have to ask yourself; as a free nation, and as a people who treasure the right to free speech and religion, do we deny other American citizens the right to practice their religion based on the horrific acts of a few radical jihad nut-jobs who caused the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians, or do we uphold our right to free speech and religion? We talk the talk, but can we walk the walk? Do we have the right to practice free religion or not? You can't have it both ways.

Just my thoughts...

Gator I agree to some extent with you post but I still think it is in bad taste and sends the wrong message. From my understanding placing a mosque in conquered areas is ordered by the Koran. In that regard I think it would be a slap in the face to all the people that died from all religions and walks of life. Freedom of religion should not trump victims rights. I mean it is the same as putting up an alter to serial killers at the spot they killed their victims. The only difference here is under the name of religion. Most people do not have a problem with them having a place if worship but under the circumstance seems strange.

I was please to hear about 75% of Americans are against this. I was also pleased that more than half of a certain political party was also against it. As for s political football yes but you would think most non radical political types would stay away from something so far outside the main stream.

As long as they don't allow any churches, synagogues, buddhist temples, flying spaghetti monster landing pads, etc within the same radius, then fine. Otherwise, it's a group of morons and bigots spreading fear of the unknown to the weak minded. There is your 75% of Americans who are against this.

Name one (1) good reason that does not based on fear or pride as to why building a mosque 2 blocks away from the World Trade Center should not be allowed.

This nation was not founded as a Christian nation, but for some weird reason we have become one of the most intolerant societies outside of Sharia practicing countries. Is this the overall goal? Do we have to beat them in fundamentalism? Do we always have to be #1?

I only dissagree with where its going, because of the message it sends to the terriorist organizations, and it will be a target for hate by our own citizens. Lets be honest the US isn't exactly a place of tolerance, no matter how much we would rather it be. I and my soon to be wife have been in a couple of screaming matches over this one and I'm not sure why. I believe they have the right to I just think its a bad idea...
we as a people may not agree but it wouldn't be a problem if any other religion was putting a church there. Yea were still pissed off about what happened but if they got the property fair and square who are we to say no. let the people who live there say no, they have more rite and power. look at walmart there's towns where they have property all setup for a store but the locals do not want one so they fight it and win all the time. Also if its backed by people that be in power, who's going to reflect them next time around? would you?

i think the news clip i watched on CNN made a very good point (a US senator).. You have to remember that it was NOT islam that caused/did 9.11, it was Al Queda.. they just happened to be muslim,

i can GUARANTEE that if these people were christian, and someone wanted to build a church, there would be no objection.

But Shotty, that's not really a good point, because they claim to do stuff in the name of Islam. Al Qaeda is an islamic group. Sure, they're fanatics and most Muslims don't think like they do, but they still label themselves as an Islamic group. I would agree with you if it weren't so...

The second point, you're probably right.

terrorist organizations..... i like that...forget that fact that we have our own terrorist organizations and whack jobs. I agree that its a few people that have some sort of power spreading fear among the week minded people of our country, I really think most of the people in the country are inbred retards, but hey we all have our own views on life so lets leave it at that and see how it all plays out.

Christians and christianity have been (and still do for the most part) opress everyone not christian, all over the world.. There are still wars based on people NOT being christian in africa etc.. and remember the Crusades back in the last century? oh yeah lol..

Alqueda is an Extremist group who just happen to be muslims.. they justify their actions because of the twisted inturpretation of the koran, which is much the same as the bible and if you actually read into it, has the same "human morals" (love thy neighbour, all men/women are equal etc) as the bible.

We have an issue in the UK at the moment of the Burka (full headdress showing only the eyes). The people who advocate it say it is a religious requirement, but it is nothing refereced in any of the religious scriptures of islam that women must not show their faces etc.. it is merely a fouled view of the texts used to justify something that is wrong.

there is not one religion that has no blood on their hands either past or present.. and it is a VERY good point that one extremist (or many, still the minority) have tarnished the name of the islamic religion.. there is still no good reason for that mosque not to be built there..

Don't get me wrong, I agree completely that most Muslims aren't like that. Some of my closest friends are Muslims and they aren't running around killing people or anything. I understand they are extremist. But they still claim to do things in the name of Islam, thus building a mosque there would be a sort of victory for them.

And stopping them building hte mosque would be more of a justification of the problems they have with american society dont you think, and prove them all right (the extremists that is)..

i say, let it go ahead, show them america IS accepting..

I dont think its outrageous to be opposed someone from building a mosque at a cite where thousands of people died due to islamic extremists, but I do like the point of acceptance. I donno. I guess I stand opposed but ok if it happens.
