These guys are badasses!

 

Salient points:

 

  • SIM cards are tiny computers that can run code, and are controlled by the carriers (and hackers)
  • You can brute force the private key on 25% of provider-issued SIM cards and install apps (need the SIM card...maybe)
  • The key uses a way old standard (DES)
  • You can use the Android emulator to support this, so if someone gets your SIM card they can probably get the key within a couple days
  • Carriers probably use a shared key for broadcast messages (weather alerts, etc), so it's possible getting this key unlocks a bunch of phones
  • You can send SMS commands to phones once unlocked to install apps
  • SIM card apps can do things directly with the network without the phone knowing
  • Speakers do shots with the organizers on stage at DEFCON
